No orcas present.

We believe the whales finally have made their way into Queen Charlotte Strait - at least, we lost track of their calls. They had come to Blackfish Sound after a lazy, sleepy saunter through basically Weynton Passage. They took forever to get this far and for quite a while earlier they had drifted off the entrance to Weynton Pass spread out to Telegraph and Beaver Coves. Most of the day has been shrouded in fog and smoke haze. But just like the day before the A30s, I15s, A23s/25s and I35/68s headed west from the Boat Bay area across from Robson Bight. From there, in various groups they moved together west up the Strait. CP saw the I16s quite close and carry on up the Hanson shore. Eventually, all the groups ended up off of Weynton Pass. They pretty much shut down when they got there. The Lab kept recording, hoping they would vocalise but hours went by. Finally, after the whales made they slow attempt at Weynton we stopped recording and waited patiently until they came out the other side. The Sea Lion Rock camera can spy into Blackfish Sound and Charlie washable to make out a group pointing west. The A5s and A30s also obliged by calling. Tomorrow is another day but this one has just a couple hours left . We will see what happens next.

Distant calls audible.

Distant A5 calls on the FI hyrdrophone. At least 12 whales seem to be pointing North West toward Queen Charlotte Strait. Some whales are foraging in the middle of the top of end of Weynton.

Distant calls audible.

The A30s and I15s are audible on the FI hydrophone. We have reports that the whales were last seen around Stubbs Island pointed towards Queen Charlotte Strait. Apparently their movements were sporadic, so there is a chance they could head into Blackfish Sound. Check back soon for another update.

No calls but orcas nearby

Update of the last hours: Around noon the I16s were really close to our outpost at Cracroft Point and were heading West. Other orcas were spotted around Blinkhorn and Telegraph cove, all very spread out. G clan orcas were at that time on the shoreline of Hanson Island. We also had a report of 3 Biggs orcas heading West in the Strait around 1PM. The orcas were last heard around 2:20 PM on Critical Point and headed into Weynton Passage. There they turned around at 3:08PM to go back to Johnstone Strait on the Hanson Island shoreline around 5PM.

No calls but orcas nearby

We think the A30s/A5s/I15s/I31 group kept going east from the Bight last night. The last calls and echolocation we heard were at 1:04am. We had a report that a group of orcas near Swaine Point at 10:01am. It's a beautiful foggy morning at the lab!
