Lots of action today, around 9 am this morning we spotted about 35+ Pacific white sided dolphins travelling quickly in front of the lab while some stayed and foraged for awhile. Then we had a humpback come in and was joined by a second humpback around 10 am and both had lots of Dalls porpoises for company. Around 2 we had another visit from a humpback who's been foraging off Parson Island for an hour now

Distant calls audible.

This morning the dolphins were chatting briefly. We did not get a location on them but they stopped coincidently at the time a small cruise ship entered Blackney. yesterday evening just before dark a group of Bigg's orcas passed south through Blackney. once they got into the Strait they became vocal. Just before they had disappeared from our view in the very last of the light Kate thought she saw them toss something in the air so perhaps they had a successful hunt. Just now a humpback is making its way south through Blackney.

No calls but orcas nearby

Just before 10pm last night, in the fading light, 5-6 Bigg's (one male) travelled south in Blackney Pass and into Johnstone Strait.

Thanks to the Marine Detective Jackie we now know the humpback was 11 year old KC!

No orcas present.

Just when one needed to see a whale there was a lovely humpback heading south through Blackney Pass mid channel. Heard the blow first about 2:30pm then watched several breaths before disappearing around Gab's Rock toward Johnstone Strait. No flukes but we did get a picture of the dorsal fin which we will pass on to Jackie, Christie and Marie. :)

No orcas present.

It was a nice day, windy and grey but nice just the same. Early this morning between 2 and 4am the dolphins were chatting and occasionally during the day. neil reported a small group in Johnstone Strait. We had 4 juvenile sea lions in our bay rolling over each other, sometimes looking playful and sometimes quite focused.

Today's humpback report from Jackie: KC was seen in Johnstone Strait surrounded by dolphins while Ariel was spotted by the Lukwa in Weynton Pass and earlier in Christie Pass travelling with Chunky. Old familiar whales returing for yet another season! Welcome back!

No orcas present.

Just before 7pm we saw our first humpbacks in Blackney Pass! There were two. We last saw them heading north past the Parson Island light. Neither presented their flukes but we managed to get distant pictures of dorsal fins. We will send these on to Christie and Co to have a look. This was of special interest after the incident where a breaching whale was hit accidently by a boat in johnstone Strait. Everyone is now on the look out for a possibly injured whale. The driver of the boat was badly injured and we hope his recovery goes well.
