Transients calling
Superb sounds!!
We,ve been listening to Transients calls since 23:47. They are brief and fleeting, but so nice to hear. Seem to be coming from LL mic, and the last ones heard at 12:43 seem to be louder. Clouds are starting to hide the moonlight. Calls seem to have stopped for now.

The day started with a beautiful sunrise, and flat calm. The Sea Lions have still been out of sight all day. Very calm waters made for a pleasant day around the lab, and the sunshine was great while it lasted. At night fall it,s started to clear with the quarter moon shining bight, and stars starting to appear. No Orca seen or heard today. Maybe through the night or tommorrow.

T77s, T23s, T18s, T2s, T55s. and 2 new calves!
Superb sounds!!
Several small transient groups have been making their way through Blackney Pass toward Johnstone Strait. The groups were spread out across the Pass. The last group which includes a young male is off Parson Island now slowly following the other two groups. They are vocal. Lots of birds have been following them. A seal has been keeping an eye on them while safely hauled out on rocks this side.

The transients, possibly the same groups as earlier, sound like they are now closer to Robson Bight. The Critical Point hydrophone battery is low so the signal is not very stable.

for the record: Jared Towers went out and found the whales (still in small groups) between Cracroft Point and Swain point (Boat Bay). Jared identified 16; the T77s, T23s,T18s,T2s and the T55s. There were two new calves (T23C3 and T77D). Five members from these various groups were missing and Jared wondered if yet another group was further ahead. Generally, the whales were going eastward very slowly. Jared heard calls as well and noted the groups were very social.

Heard great news from Jared Towers tonight! He saw A12 with the A36s near Scarlett Point today. This is not far from Port Hardy. Perhaps, just maybe they will be kind enough to "drop down" our way in the near future. So amazing to think this bond between these whales has lasted so long.

The weather is still making maintenance difficult but today the good efforts of Paul and Paul got charged batteries to the right place and the system reconnected. The disappeared in the direction of Johnstone Strait without disturbing the hauled out sea lions.

The A12s and A36s just vanished on us just after 6am on the 15th. But considering the tide was in full ebb we imagine that they left the area. We heard from CetaceaLab that the A30s, I31s (both recently here) and the A5s were in their area. Always nice to think that the whales can be tracked over the large area. The heavy rains here abated and we actually have fine weather at the moment which is almost as exciting as whales.

Sorry, our internet was down for all of yesterday and most of today. The connection was just re-established and audio is working again. While we were "away" the whales were (of course) very active. The A34s began the day by coming west from east of the eastern end of the Ecological Reserve. Their timing was perfect for incoming from Blackfish Sound were the A30s and I31s. A12 might have been there too (she is seen later with the other orcas). The A30s and the I31s rushed into Johnstone Strait via Blackney Pass on the last of the flooding tide to meet up with the A34s. They did not linger long and before we knew it the whales were booting it north through Blackney Pass. Possibly, the A34s were in the lead. We never saw them but, the first whale we saw head into Blackfish Sound, was possibly A12. The A30s and the I31s (now quite mixed up with all male groups prominent) hurried through. By 2:30pm they were all well into Blackfish Sound and on their way to Queen Charlotte Strait where Jared Towers confirmed that all the A12s,A30s,I31s were present. In addition, he saw the G25s (part of the G17s). We did not hear or see this group. Jared mentioned that the all male groups were still going strong when he encountered the groups off the Penfold Islands. Quite the day, sorry again, that there wasn't any internet. Dolphins were heard distantly through the night. There had been dolphins with the orcas as they travelled north.

There must be a Murphy law at work here. just when the whales get interesting the internet glitches. This time it was outside of our network. It has been days since the last comment. Yes, we are here but the orcas are still not around. This has made for a very "thin" October. Humpbacks are still here and very active as are the sea lions. A very nice sunny day at this end of the Island.

Just got word from Jared Towers that the transients today were the very rare T36s travelling along with the T99s. There are two new calves in the group plus a previous calf. So this was exciting as they were vocal in Blackfish Sound and this is the first time DFO has had a chance to document the new calves in this unusual encounter. The transients circled around Hanson Island back to Blackfish Sound. Jared left them in Weynton Passage. Jared also confirmed that all the A1s were in the Strait, now heading back eastward with dolphins and Dalls Porpoise all around them. A humpback with sea lions completed the report.

Here's a twist. As the A1s continued to be vocal in Johnstone Strait, we began to hear calls in Blackfish Sound just before 6pm. We had heard from Jim Borrowman that there were blows off Lizard Point at 4pm so we wondered if there were new incoming. But we were not prepared for southern residents to show up. Jared Towers followed them in and identified them as part of the Ls. This group (20 strong) moved into Blackney Pass and tried to make headway against the current and tide. The A1s became quiet just about this time in Johnstone Strait. The Ls never made it through (at least not yet) . The tide has pushed them back almost to Blackfish Sound.

Good news: A12 has re-joined the A36s and they are in the Lizard Point area today, currently going west, in a tight group. Nice to know, they know, how to manage themselves in the big ocean and find each other and keep each other company.

A12 earlier headed in that direction after probably going through Blackney Pass and Blackfish Sound around 10am.

We believe A12 kept going toward Robson Bight despite the looming ebb tide. There were a few more calls. The wind is very strong. The Lukwa tried to see her in Johnston Strait but it was very uncomfotable and they left for calmer waters. Nick Templeman phoned to say that they had been with the T10s who they picked up coming out of Calm Channel. After passing through Hole-in-the-Wall and Okisollo Channel the group headed toward Discovery Channel. The wind "below" is very strong too.

No calls but orcas nearby
The internet service in Alert Bay has been down for a while. At 5am this morning we heard A12 calls once again. Again, we were interested in how few calls were being made and wondered if we were just listening to A12 by herself. This turned out to be the case and this morning after heading east to Robson Bight and the beaches, A12 was seen off of the Sophia Islands heading towards CP by Sailcone. A12 then headed into Blackney Pass and past us mid channel. She is now in Blackfish Sound headed west. She has made a few more calls.

Just before 8pm there were a few A12 calls in Blackfish Sound. We listened to see if there were blows in Blackney Pass a short while later. There were but it was not possible to track after a tug came hurrying through the Pass. We have not heard any calls since the ones in Blackfish Sound. Possibly things have progressed to Johnstone Strait but we will wait and see.

Meanwhile, the boat up this direction are enjoying the sunshine and calm after the storm while watching humpbacks.

We're hearing distant calls from the A30s on the Critical Point hydrophone, and heard a report from a fishing boat shortly after 7am that a pod of orcas was westbound at the east end of Hanson Island, so we think the A30s are probably somewhere to the west of Big Bay by now.

No calls but orcas nearby
We have been following the movements of 8 transients today. They were found off Bold Head by the Gikumi earlier. At that time they may have made a kill and Jim Borrowman was able to identify two of the orcas as T91 and T92 (large male). From there they travelled along the Swanson,Compton and Harbledown Island shoresfinally moving right into the back of parson bay. Several Dalls Porpoise preceded them in the same direction. It is not clear if the transients managed another kill or not but eventually they moved out to the big rock near the Parson Island light. After a few circles around the rock (it looked as if they were interested in something there too) they moved south along Parson Island. They are now headed in the direction of Baronet Pass. The A30s are still in the Lower Johnstone Strait area, perhaps in Frederick Arm.

Jim Borrowman corrected the transient ids to 147,148 and 149. The rest will be decided when the photos are looked at. They were last seen going east in Johnstone Strait. A group of 200 dolphins came west from the east end of the Reserve at the same time the transients entered Johnstone Strait. We later heard the dolphins briefly.

It has been a wild afternoon. The I31s (in several different groupings) basically went west in Johnstone Strait as did the I15s. But the i15s took the relatively simpler route back to Johnstone Strait by curling around Hanson island and travelling back via Blackfish Sound and Blackney Pass. They then went over to the Vancouve Island shore and east to Robson Bight where they are calling now.The I33s,who just came south through Blackney on their way back to the Strait, had also gone west earlier and left the Strait via Pearse Pass. I62 was in the lead all day. I46 and I68 and I111 went west along the Vancouver Island shore until Alder Bay where they cut across to Alert Bay. As the a30s continued toward the rubbing beaches, the I15s mixed with the A12s,A36s and I31s off of the Bight area. The a30s began a rub at 5:17am and concluded it at 5:32am. The others continued for a while and then shifted eastward and by 6:24am were closer to the east end of the Reserve. By 7:25am, we no longer heard calls.

Distant calls audible.
Right now we are listening to A1 (A12) calls off the east end of the Ecological Reserve. After the last of the I15s (the I16s) went north to join the other I15s, the A36s,the A12s and the I33s, the groups returned to Johnstone Strait by travelling south through Blackney Pass, starting around 10pm. By 1:17am the I15s were closing in on Robson Bight. The A12s and the A36s were heard as they slipped toward the east end of the Reserve by 3am. The I15s went in for a long rub starting at 3:37am and ending at 4:06am. From there they went back to the west. As the A12s and A36s lingered closer to the east end, the i15s were offshore of the Robson Bight area by 4:35am. The A12s and A36s eventually (5am) followed the i15s but they may have been closer to the Cracroft Island side. Some of the movement again turned east. At 7:35am, at least, the A12s had returned to the east end of the Reserve. The calls have since dropped & the morning foggy so we are waiting for other clues as to where all the groups may have ended up.

Around 10:30am the A36s were found mid strait heading west opposite the Cliff. A12 went by below the Cliff. The A36s and A12 (following) continued west along the Hanson Island shore after crossing closer to cracroft Point. The A34s, at around 11:30am passed right under the Cliff, in a playful tight group, on their way west, as well. Twenty minutes ago they were headed right into the "Pig Ranch" (the Cracroft Island shore just east of the Sophia Islands. There is also an unidentified group off Stimpson Reef.

The A12s and the A36s stayed off the entrance to Weynton Pass forever after their trip to the west this morning. Finally, they moved toward Cracroft point. This was at about the same time the I35s came up from the east. There were no I33s reported today so we think they went out to the west yesterday and that the I35s came in with the returning other groups. We did not hear the I15s after they came west from their 4am rub. After reaching the entrance to Blackney Pass and Cracroft Point, the A12s and the A36s lingered there for another long while. We occasionally heard resting calls from the I35s but they were difficult to track after they neared the area opposite Blackney Pass. The A12s and A36s have moved on again but we are not sure if they are following the last of the ebb or will wait for the flood tide that will begin soon.

I15s, A36s, A4s, A5s, A12s, A30s
No orcas present.
Sorry, the streaming is gone again for a bit while we sort out new IP addresses. Since yesterday, there is not much to report except around 5pm a group of at least 7 orcas passed CP on their way to the east. These whales were reported to have come in via Weynton Pass although there is some confusion as visual IDs were not available and the whales were not vocal. They passed on to Boat bay and then started to cross over toward the east end of the Reserve. As far as we know the I15s were eastbound on the Vancouver Island shore during this time. They also got to the beaches and from there we thinks they may have carried on to the east. But this is also not 100% clear as there were no calls to give additional clues after 8:08pm. We are waiting to see how the day unfolds. The A36s were the last vocal whales in Blackfish Sound yesterday evening (8pm) and they may still not be too far away as they seemed to not be entirely committed to leaving this area. There was a report a short while ago of 2 whales off of Lizard Point in Queen Charlotte Sound. Dolphins continue to tour the area and can be heard from time to time.

We've been listening to echolocation of the Critical Point hydrophone, and Marie at the Cliff reports a group of orcas in the Robson Bight estuary, heading west. We picked them up on the "other" side, at the top of Blackfish Sound just as the A30s were moving through Blackney Pass to the north and into Blackfish Sound. We could still hear an A4 group in the Strait and then traveling through Blackney Pass too. This sounded like the A11,A56 and A13's group. We are not sure what happened to the I15s after they poked their noses into Blackney Pass this afternoon. There were just a few calls before 6pm and then we lost track. Before the evening is over hopefully we will be able to account for all the groups.

Boy, this is busy! First a probable correction is needed. the Bs may not be there. It was a mistake of hearing the word "Bs" for "Ds" in the early morning. What is clear is that the A1s, A4s, and A5s came into Johnstone Strait along with the I15s and I31s between 4 and 5am. The Ds never seemed to come very far to the east so we are not sure where they are now. There is a sleepy group west bound between Alert Bay and Haddington Island on the Vancouver Island pointed toward Malcolm Island. This may be the C6s. There is another large group (whales everywhere today) between Cormorant Island and Malcolm Island heading toward Sointula. The Johnstone Strait whales are west bound from the beaches to Robson Bight spread out from the Cracroft Island shore to Vancouver Island. Whew! hang on to your hats!

We still are not able to stream but may have located the problem BUT we can post comments. The scene pretty much leaves off from the location of the last post but a lot has happened since. Starting with now, the A4s (all of them) , the A12s (all of them) and the A5s are making their way back west opposite Robson Bight spread out between both shores, Vancouver Island and Cracroft Island. The movement west began this morning from Kelsey Bay. The A30s are to the west after separating yesterday from the larger group. They spent most of yesterday in Queen Charlotte Strait after saying good-bye to the gang who then went east slowly and silently for the rest of the day after the A30s went north via Blackney Pass and west in Blackfish Sound. Around 3:40 pm the A30s turned back east from Bere Point and eventually made their way to Blackfish Sound just after 10pm. They ventured slightly into Blackney but by 11:16pm they were on their way west through Blackfish Sound and by 11:36pm we lost track of them. By 4pm yesterday the A4s and A5s were well on their way past the Adam River on their way to meet up with the A12s who had spent their day in the far east.

Meanwhile, the A35s passed CP at 4:44pm while the A23s,A25s and A28 were reported off the Tsitika River Estuary at 5:19pm. These whales ae a bit difficult to tack when they don't oblige by making vocalisations as is the case tonight. Probably, they turned east into the ebbing tide and fell asleep.Their progress back east has been very ,very slow and as night fell they were still west of CP. Jim Borrowman managed to get out to the transients and confirmed the T137s and identified T36A and T36A1 as the travelling companions. Apparently, they killed a small sea lion off of Bold Head in Blackfish Sound.

While the A30s were going through, the A8s were also heading west and into Blackney. We heard a couple of calls that alerted us to their presence. Then the Tuan alerted us that they were coming into Blackney. They followed the Hanson Island side closely. They too were silent and remained so as they entered Blackfish Sound. An interesting development. We have been listening to A4 calls on the rubbing beaches for the past while. Several small groups are moving west spread from the Cracroft Island shore at the Cliff to the Vancouver Island shore from Robson Bight back to the east end. It may be that the A11s came in yesterday morning and were perhaps the A4 group we heard around 4am off Critical Point and then at the Beaches a while later. Later in the day, some of the OrcaLive group identified the A11s and reported that A73 was now with them! she certainly keeps life interesting. Also, the A30s have now turned while off Lizard Point and are headed back east through Queen Charlotte Strait.

A couple of events; we are still not able to stream audio; the A24s made a "quick' jaunt back to Critical Point at 4:35am and then returned to the Beaches for a rub at 6am; a large group of dolphins passed the Lab headed north at 6;30am.

A12s, A30s, A4s, A5s, T18s
Distant calls audible.
Here is a chance to catch up. The internet service went down during the night - a problem outside of our network. Around 3am, the A30s, A24S,and A5s returned from the east. By 4am they were off Critical Point. For the next two hours, they moved around off the area opposite Robson Bight and Boat Bay, eventually heading back to the east. Later, in the very foggy morning light, a group transients (possibly the T18s) came west in the Strait and into Blackney Pass. While they cleared north at 11:40am, the A12s headed south into Blackney Pass. They had been preceded by a group of 100 Pacific Whitesided dolphins who reached the Strait by 11:34am. except for a few generic A1 calls in Blackfish Sound, the A12s travelled to the Strait silently. They are off Robson Bight now, still quiet but the a30s,A24s and the A5s are on their way back to the east end of the Reserve. A meeting is about to happen soon.

First of all: audio streaming seems to be having difficulties. We are not sure of the cause. Please be patient. Between 3 and 4pm the A23s (silent) and the A24s (vocal) and then the A25s (vocal too) passed CP headed to the west. The A30s are coming along the Vancouver Island shore headed west as well but a bit further back from the others. The A12s kept going east and the A8s haven not been accounted for yet today. The transients ended up in front of Alert Bay after passing us before noon this morning. There is also a report of a large group heading east from Port Hardy.

The A30s,in particular A39, were vocal for a short while as the whales negotiated a turn to the east. During the turn the A30s shifted direction mid strait off the entrance to Blackney Pass. The other groups then moved eastward after getting as far as Blinkhorn. The A12s at last report kept going east from the Beaches, passing the A30s,who were headed west at the time, off Strider Beach.

The A12s turned up at the beaches . It is not 100% clear if the A12s approached the Beaches from the east or the west. They had been seen continuing east past the A30s but it was possible that this was just so they could follow the parade to the west. CP was convinced that they got at least as far as Kaikash before being noticed as an unidentified group heading east. The numbers just seemed right. Regardless, all the groups have moved east beyond the Reserve now and this little corner of the ocean is quiet for the moment.

A69, Midsummer has a new calf!
No orcas present.
All quiet now, but the night was a mixture of continued A5 rubs (8;39 to 8:48pm and (9:26 to 9:36pm) and not too distant and distant, A30 and A24 calls, west of the beaches. Then, only incredibly distant calls from 9pm till just before midnight when the very distant frequent calls became slightly stronger. It sounded as if the whales must have been on the Cracroft Island shore heading west and possibly eastward (perhaps a split in the larger group?). Around 3am, there were also frequent Pacific Whitesided dolphin calls, some very close to Critical Point. After 4am, the A30s could be heard in Blackfish Sound. Possibly, they went north through Blackney Pass (mostly silently) as a few of their calls were echoing back to the Local Left hydrophone. A24 and A5 calls were not heard during this time suggesting that they may well have (at least the A5s) stayed east of the Ecological Reserve. But we will see what the morning brings. 10 whales have already been spotted heading east in Queen Charlotte Strait this morning. This may well turn out to be the A30s returning.

sorry, our internet connection has been very erratic for the past while. i'm taking this 'connected' opportunity to post the following summary of the day: the large group did not apparently split during the night. But the A24s and A5s were the silent partners to the A30s, who we know, went out to Blackfish Sound and Queen Charlotte Strait as we heard them at 4am. This morning, whales came out of Queen Charlotte Strait, through Weynton Pass and then east in Johnstone Strait. Most of this latter part was silent. Eventually, the A30s (travelling with the A23s), the A24s and the rest of the A5s arrived at the Ecological Reserve, displacing the dolphins who were hanging out deep in the Bight. The groups then found their way to the beaches where they have been for the last while. The dolphins right now are heading east under the Cliff toward Boat Bay after heading west to the entrance of Blackney Pass earlier. There are transients at the very far eastern end of Johnstone Strait. also, jared Towers thinks A69 (Midsummer) has a new calf. Paul believes he had taken a picture of the calf earlier in the summer. This will be Midummer's first!

These A24 calls are both close and further away from Critical Point. But it seems as if they have rounded Critical Point from the east so perhaps our original idea that the larger group split up last night was correct based on what we know from the visual reports for the day and the scanty acoustic clues we had. Now it seems probable that it was the A24s who stayed east while the A30s and the A5s did the circuit around Hanson Island and Johnstone Strait last night and today. It is so nice when there are solid acoustic clues. Just now, CP reports that the A30s and A5s have turned and are eastbound (still west of CP) from Blinkhorn.

It is quite remarkable that each night, for so long now, has followed such a similar pattern. A long swing to the west throughout the day, a long silent move toward the Bight in the afternoon and then a loud wake up in front of the Bight, a collective decision to go to the Beaches for a rub, then a shift back to the west afterward, only to return to the Beaches sometime during the night once again. This happened again today and the A30s, A24s and the A5s are now currently back west of Robson Bight again after an energetic rub. If the pattern holds tonight, this won't be the end of their east-west shuffle and the night might be long.

Multiple pod calls audible.
