Distant calls audible.

After a meet up in Robson Bight the A30s, I15s, and the C10s made a turn to the west around 7:18pm. The groups split up with some on the Vancouver Island side of the Strait, and some on the Cracroft side. Shortly after 7:58pm we could see several orcas around mid strait on the CP cameras. We could hear A30 calls, with I15 and C10 calls in the background. All of those orcas are now travelling west from CP in the Strait. Also, at 7:09 we had a report that some Biggs orcas, believed to be the T090s, were travelling through West Passage.

Distant calls audible.

So a lot of movement continues: We just had an update from the south (via Marie) that 40 orcas are westing from Ripple Point. No IDs yet. Meanwhile, the I16s,I4s and I65s along with the A30s came back to Johnstone Strait via Weynton Passage. Just after they entered near Weynton Island and began to head east they were vocal. The C10s who had ventured beyond the Eastern Boundary turned around this time and began to trek westward. These groups are nearing each other (in a whale sort of way). The A30s/I15 group are now around the Kaikash Creek area and the C10s will be closing in on Robson Bight soon.

No calls but orcas nearby

Before the day gets much older we thought to recap the day's events as we know them. Around midnight, the A30s were still vocal in Blackfish Sound, as the rest of the very big group continued east in Johnstone Strait. Max tracked the A30s back into Blackney Pass at 3:26am acoustically while Hanna tracked the progress of their blows through rest ofthe Pass. Megan at CP heard them continue east at 4:28am. Gradually, the calls grew louder as the A30s neared Robson Bight. After a bit of a break, whales were seen coming west from the eastern end of the Reserve at 7:20am. This turned out to be the I15 group from yesterday (I16s and I4s). They did a brief rub as they continued west at 7:29am. They met up with the A30s along the way and both groups continued to the west from there. Life got very busy fast from that point on. At 9:35 we heard via the Wardens that the Campbell River boats had reported a large group of orcas heading east from Chatham Point. And meanwhile, Troy reported another group heading east from Bere Point. At 10:09am we began to hear C10 calls in Blackfish Sound. The C10s bucked the tide into Blackney and continued south to the entrance of Blackney Pass and Johnstone Strait. As they did so, the A30s and the I15s came into Blackney from the Strait, passed the C10s and carried on to the north. Right now, as the C10s continue to the Reserve, the A30s and I15s are between Donegal Head and Bold Head. Whew!

Orcas hunting fish.

We can hear the I15's echolocating and infrequently calling as they travel west towards Robson Bight.

Distant calls audible.

Over the course of the last few hours the A30s made their way through Blackney Pass and into Johnstone Strait. We can still hear them intermittently around the Bight, and they still appear to be alone.

Superb sounds!!

The tide has just turned to flood and the A30s have decided to make the most of it. Great calls as they move through Blackney, and we're also tracking their blows under a spectacular moon! Nothing has been heard yet from the other groups seen earlier, who we believe to have travelled east from the bight. Perhaps the A30s will shed some light.

Distant calls audible.

The tide to ebb stopped and we started hearing calls in Blackfish Sound again at 00:38,first infrequent and now they seem to be getting more chatty again!
