Sorry everyone, but we have lost our internet connection & don't know when we will be able to stream live audio again. We're trying to figure the problem out, and will hopefully solve it before too long. Meanwhile, we should tell you that the "G clan" groups who have been in Johnstone Strait lately headed "out" via Blackney Pass & Blackfish Sound this afternoon. As the A30s and the G/I groups came toward the entrance of Blackney Pass, we had the nice surprise of seeing the G3s, G23s and possibly the G31s come into Blackney Pass from Blackfish Sound. There was also a group of dolphins travelling with them and as they sped through, they excited a group of sea lions who extended their necks to see what was going on. They then mixed it up with the dolphins as the whales continued toward Johnstone Strait. The A30s may have come into view briefly as the new arrivals negotiated the rest of the Pass. The dolphins and the sea lions eventually calmed down.

Distant calls audible.

Just after 5am we began to hear distant G clan calls. The group made their way into Blackney from Blackfish Sound at the slack tide and then continued to make a go of it against the tide. We could hear their blows at 6am mid channel, making progress, opposite Parson Island light. The wind is picking up and it is more difficult to hear blows. They just started to become vocal again. Possibly I31. Heading into Johnstone Strait.

What a day! Ok so here is what has happened so far... the groups of whales that went to the west cleared into Weynton Pass and they have curled around into Blackfish Sound. Jackie on the Maple Leaf let us know that they are headed east. The whales are in mixed groups and are being accompanied by persistent dolphins. Not orcas but dolphins. Several reports to relay: First of all Jared Towers identified today's transients as the T99s. They ended up passing Alert Bay and Hyde Creek on their way west. Next the Gs from this morning were located by Rob Williams& Erin Ashe and Sun Fun Divers in Queen Charlotte Strait this afternoon. They certainly had not gone far since the morning. This group turned out to be all the G3s. They continued west and were last seen off Malcolm Point. Finally, the whales to the east were reported to have made it through Seymour Narrows by 4:45pm. Jack Springer let Marie know of their progression. In this group are more G clan whales along with all the A1s. Earlier in the day (around noon), Aaron reported that these same whales were off the "bottom" end of Quadra Island. Quite the day! Great reports! Right now there are vocal dolphins again in Johnstone Strait not far from the east end of the Reserve.

They were off Blackney Pass for quite a long time but on the slack to the ebb (4:20pm) they started to move west again along Hanson Island.

Boat noise

Beyond knowing that the A30s and the I31s went to the west between 4 and 5pm we have not heard calls for several hours and not sure where or what they decided to do. There should still be groups to the east so we will have to see what the night reveals.

Boat noise

Just now the I31s and A30s are travelling west through Queen Charlotte Strait. They were east of Donegal Head (8am) moving toward Queen Charlotte Strait. Our inter-net connection woes have continued. It seems to be working right now so we will take the opportunity to fill in the night's activity. It was a busy night with the A30s and the I31s stalled off the east end of the Reserve for a very long time. Before midnight, the I15s came up from the east. They had gone east yesterday morning and were most likely the group seen at the Broken Islands as the I31s and A30s came into the Reserve together (after the I33s came through Blackney Pass) in the later morning. The I15s then came up (travelled west) to Blackney Pass and through this morning (2-3am) to Blackfish Sound. Then this morning, we heard the close calls of the A30s and I31s at 7:05am in Blackfish Sound before they carried on to the west. We lost track of the A30 calls just before 9am.

The A30s and the I31s are back in Johnstone Strait after reversing their direction while in Queen Charlotte Strait and travelling back through Weynton Pass. (Tuan and Naiad report) The I16s are off Black Bluff and still headed west in Queen Charlotte Strait. Another group is apparently closer to Numas (Gikumi report).

The I31s and the A30s sound as if they have not ventured to far from Robson Bight. But they have woken up and begun to call out beautifully, A large group of dolphins came into Blackney Pass coming about half way before turning back. They were spread out, chatty and looked like they were foraging. This was just before dark. They are now back in Blackfish ound.

The A30s and the I31s rounded Critical Point in Robson Bight at 9:07pm. They continued east and are now off the rubbing beaches. We are at the moment listening to the A30s. Before this, we were recording the sometimes close dolphins alternatively in Blackfish Sound and Blackney Pass. on a sadder note, I46 does not look very well. The top third of his dorsal fin is flopped over to the right and it looks like there is damage there as well. Those who have been watching him over the last few days are wondering if his engery is depleted as well.

Here is a bit of a surprise! More than the A30s have turned up in Johnstone Strait. Marie can see both a group of 10 near the Main rubbing beach AND a group of 5-6 heading east slowly from the eastern boundary of the Reserve. Just after midnight, we thought we heard blows in Blackney Pass but the wind and wave action and absence of calls made us not confident that there were orcas incoming. We are now checking the last parts of the recording to see if anyone else but the A30s were vocal. We will keep you posted.

It is a lot harder to track whales when they do not call. And it has been rather complicated with the bouts of calls we have heard. The I33s simply enough went east along the Cracroft Island shore to Boat Bay. From there, around 12pm, they crossed over to the eastern boundary. The A30s were coming back toward them with perhaps someone else. Meanwhile, there is another group of 5 nearer the Eve River. This group has not been yet identified. We believe the A30s are moving west through the Reserve so hopefully, Marie will be able to figure out the next stage.

Transients here, transients there, transients, transients everywhere! The small group of transients (T02, T101B, T101A,T101) circled around Hanson Island. At 9:30am they were off Blinkhorn and the western end of Hanson Island. From there they went east and past CP by 10:15am. They are moving very quickly eastward. Also, T14 plus two females and a calf were off the Campbell River dock this morning at 9:30am. They have since continued south and are off the south end of Quadra Island. T20 and T21 were seen off Thurston Bay just before 10am. The pretty good network of observers are doing well keeping track! Thanks to Christie, the Cliff, Aaron, Jack, the Lukwa and the Naiad fo keeping us informed.

Hi guys. An update from the East. The small fins with T-14 were id'd by Simon from Cowichan Bay Whalewatch as the T-124s and T-90s plus one new calf which still has a very orange eye patch. The group with T-14 was last seen traveling South along the Marina Island shoreline headed towards Mittlenatch Island at 1645 hrs. On our way into Campbell River we were with T-20 and T-21 for a short visit. They were doing long dive down the middle of Discovery Passage headed South past Painters Lodge.

The morning updates are in and it appears there is a group of orcas off Camp Point. Jack identified seven transients who are being very social with each other this lovely morning after all the rain. They are west bound. Yesterday afternoon around 3:30pm Kingfisher Kayak group saw 5-6 ocas come into Johnstone Strait from Weynton Pass. The pictures are being looked at in Telegrapg Cove and we will update when we know more. There were also whales seen heading west at 6:30pm (maybe the same group) off the Wastells near Telegraph Cove by the Songhees. No identification of this group was determined.

Whew! A very exciting day with over 100 whales passing through the area this morning. To summarize: Last night the I15s came into Blackney Pass and back to Johnstone Strait by 3:30am via Weynton Pass, just in time for the groups coming west toward the Ecological Reserve who became audible to us around 4am. A steady progression then ensued with the C10s and C6s along with the I11s first to pass the entrance to Blackney Pass around 7am. A12 and the A36s then led part of the "parade" past the Lab starting from 7:21am. An hour later, the A34s had followed A12 & the A36s, then the G17s, G29s,G31s,I15s and G12s. They caried on through Blackfish Sound, past Donegal Head and west along the "backside" of Malcolm Island. The Cs and the I11s went west to Pearse Pass and turned west into Cormorant Channel. As these groups were continuing on their respective paths, the A30s, A5s and possibly I68 formed the rear and chose to go through the more conventional route out through Weynton Pass and across the western end of Blackfish Sound. Since all this began the tide has turned and is now in flood.
