Distant calls audible.

It sounds as if the A5s and G1 groups met up with the A30s and I15s in Blackfish Sound shortly after our last update. At 3:18pm we began to hear a variety of A clan and G clan calls on our Flower Island hydrophone. The whales remained distant in Blackfish Sound for several hours and their calls began to fade shortly after 5:00pm. We received a report that there were 50+ whales travelling south through Weynton Passage at 5:15pm. Jared Towers has confirmed that the A30s, A23s/25s, I115s, I11s (without the I12s) and the G1 groups have been seen in Weynton. We began to hear their calls on the Critical Point hydrophone at 5:27pm just as the tide turned to the flood.

Multiple pod calls audible.

These whales never stop! We believe the A5s and the G1s continued west to Weynton Pass. We picked up their calls off the western end of Blackfish Sound. The A30s and I15 group continued to mill off of the entrance to Blackney Pass and then just ahead of the slack tide they came through Blackney Pass headed north. The A30s led them in and the rest in pockets of small groups followed. Everyone is still audible but growing distant now. My there is a lot of boat noise as well!

Multiple pod calls audible.

We are having a lot of fun trying to figure out all the whale movements throughout last night. We know for sure the A30s, C10s and the I15 group went west in the Strait just before midnight toward Weynton Pass then out to Blackfish Sound by 1am where they stayed until moving eastward later in the morning. Two hours later, around 3am, Momoko heard briefly some G clan calls but not enough to understand who in Johnstone Strait. It seemed that they were headed west. Later, in the morning, just before 8am, Jared Towers watched the I33s and others pass near Alert Bay and take Pearse Pass toward Cormorant Channel. Perhaps this is who Momoko heard at 3am. Then, between 4 and 6am, we heard clear A5 calls as they approached the Cracroft Point area. With them and not too far behind were the G1 group from the previous day. We surmised that all these whales, with the exception of the A30s, I15s and C10s, were in their various groups travelling back to the west after spending yesterday deep in the eastern parts of Johnstone Strait. While Max followed the whales (Gs etc) off CP with the camera, Charlie was tracking a silent group go west close to the Vancouver Island shore of Robson Bight. He thought it might have been the I11s. While this was all happening, the I15 group and the A30s (perhaps the C10s as well) decided to head south through Blackney Pass and meet up with the whales off Cracroft Point where the various families spread out to forage and mill. This is as far as the story goes so far.

Distant calls audible.

We picked up some G clan calls. They are in the Strait. We don't know who they are yet. Waiting for them to speak up. Haven't heard any calls from the A30s, I15s and the B sub clan group since 1:08am.

Distant calls audible.

After the short break, we started hearing calls again. The calls are from the A30s and the I15s. Sounds like they are west of Johnstone Strait.
