Merry Christmas from Hanson Island. The water is as still as a pond and we enjoyed a brilliant sunrise. A happy and safe holiday for everyone in the orca live community!

Distant calls audible.

A lot of static on the hydrophones but we can just make out some Biggs on Flower Island.

No orcas present.

After a brilliant and calm day yesterday, the wind has picked up and white caps dot the pass. The sea lions down the way look chilly huddled together on the rocks.

Distant calls audible.

We're hearing some very faint Bigg's (transients) on Flower Island. What a beautiful thing to wake up for in the middle of the night!

Yesterday, Marie saw a lone male orca over by the Nimpkish River across from Alert Bay. He was travelling west at about 4pm. Thanks Marie for the heads up.

No orcas present.

What a gorgeous day at the lab! The sun is out and the mountains on Vancouver Island look spectacular with some fresh snow near their peaks. We're enjoying a peaceful Sunday here on Hanson Island.

No orcas present.

What a storm! After blowing 50 knots most of the night, the wind has finally died down and even the rain seems to be letting up.

No orcas present.

After a stormy and windy night it's a pretty morning here at the lab. Still no update on the I15s since they were seeing easting past the Rubbing Beaches. We assume they're still in the strait somewhere. Maybe today is the day they'll come back through.

No orcas present.

Since yesterday, more information about Rhapsody, J32 who was found floating off Comox BC (upper Georgia Strait) and towed to shore. She was born in 1996, lost her mother in the winter of 1998-1999. A necropsy will be conducted on Saturday. A very sad event for everyone. I believe this leaves the southern residents with only 77 members. Coincidently, this comes when there has been a lot of recent movement of the northern residents, the I15s (orca-live), C6s and Ds (see Mackay Whale Watching) around the Johnstone Strait and Queen Charlotte Strait area in the last couple of days. Yesterday, the Lab recorded Bigg's orcas both in Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound.

No calls but orcas nearby

We received a report from Jared Towers this morning about orcas off of Cracroft Point. Paul and Helena have spotted one male that appears to be heading East. Yesterday, we watched the I15's continue heading East past the rubbing beaches down the Strait
