No orcas present.
We have had a fairly quiet afternoon at the Lab. As the day has progressed, it sounds as though our earlier suspicions may be correct. The A30s and the I15s continued west into Blackfish Sound and we believe the A23s/25s along with the I35s re-grouped with them via Weynton Passage. At 1:02pm we had reports that the orcas were very slowly westing between Bere Point and Malcolm Point. Although the orcas have gone west, we have had several humpback vocalizations on the hydrophones throughout the evening. We are currently hearing humpback calls on the Flower Island hydrophone!

No calls but orcas nearby
We just received a report that 4 or 5 orcas are at Blinkhorn off the Vancouver Island shoreline.

No orcas present.
The whale watch boats coming out this morning in the fog located orcas off Lizard Point after a fisherman's report. We have clarified some of what went on during the night. Just before midnight all the groups, the A23/25s, A20s, I15s and I35s went back into Johnstone Strait and headed east. Nothing was heard until 3am. Boat Bay also let us know that they heard blows off the camp at that time. We had the impression that the I35s were closer to Robson Bight while the A30s and I15s were more mid strait. Eventually, the A30s and the I15s started to move back toward the entrance of Blackney Pass. As reported earlier, the I15s moved north through Blackney followed closely by the A30s. A humpback off Parson Island was quite vocal too. The Humpback also moved north, was heard on the local hydrophone and then Flower Island. After a break, we began to hear the A23/25s off Cracroft Point and the entrance to Blackney Pass. We think the I35s were with them and that they too headed west but stayed in the Strait and perhaps exited through Weynton. We are waiting for confirmation about this possibility. The fog has cleared and perhaps even our confusion.

Orcas near mics.
Sure enough, at 10pm last night the day was not done. The group's forays westward were short-lived, and they were heard back at Flower Island within the hour. Before midnight, they passed south through Blackney, breathing beautifully as they went. Although we could not be sure of hearing I15s on the hydrophones, the A5s, I31s and A1s (very likely A30s) made themselves known, and the number of blows implied the full group that have been around for the last few days were present - assuming this group is still intact. The last calls we heard were off Parson Island at 23:52 in the Strait. A1 and G-clan calls could then be heard on Critical Point around 3am. At 5:10am we became aware of calls again on Cracroft Point, and whales off the entrance of Blackney Pass. Around 5:30 the I15s were in Blackney Pass, and we could hear blows off Compton Island. At this time we could hear the A30s along with the I15s. We're not sure what the A30s decided to do. At 6:12am there was a humpback vocalising on Parson Island, who could be heard travelling through Blackney, and was last heard off Flower Island at 7.26am. It is worth noting that at 7:19am I15 vocalisations could be heard very briefly on Flower Island, but have not been heard since.
