The transients from yesterday evening were T054, T058, T002B and the T007Bs. They were at the mouth of Blackney Pass @19:00 milling & socializing, lots of breaching and tail slapping!! Thanks to Jared Towers for the IDs. Also, thanks to a report from Bill & Donna Mackay, Jackie Hildering found and IDed 2 well-known 'local' humpbacks, KC and Nick, in Queen Charlotte Strait yesterday at ~1600!!!

No orcas present.
After Bill and Wendy's report of whales going past Pearse Island the Mackays saw a westbound group east of Haddington Island about an hour after the first report. Thanks for the update! Also, yesterday two flocks of geese passed overhead at 3:15pm - the animal world is on the move!

No calls but orcas nearby We had a call from Bill at Pearse Island, who saw 8 orcas headed west at 11:30am. There was 1 male in the group, and 1 young baby. Probably, these were the transients we heard off CP earlier this morning. Thanks Bill! Paul & Helena 15 Apr 2012 12:51:13 PDT |
Performing maintenance We'll be down for a bit, looking into an encoder issue. Hope to back soon. Paul & Helena 15 Apr 2012 11:25:40 PDT |

Distant calls audible. The T18/19s, T20/21, T55s & T23s slowly headed east in Johnstone Strait around 4pm. They were very vocal behind the boat noise created by a huge seiner heading east. Jared Towers, of DFO, caught up with these guys at Kaikash. Some fisherman also reported ~13 orca, including 2 males on the top side of Malcolm island earlier today and they were heading this way. Beautiful, sunny and calm day!!

Report: The Mackay's got a report last night about ~ 30 orcas heading east between Christie Pass and Duncan Island. There were only 2 males in the group and a ton of little ones. There were also a lot of tails in the air...wonder who they are???? Leah 04 Apr 2012 09:54:22 PDT |
Boat noise There are intermittent transient calls in johnstone Strait somewhere behind the boat noise. 2 tugs with tows are heading south in Blackney, 1 F/V is heading north in Blackney and a tug with tow is heading east off Robson Bight. Heavy vessel traffic over the past couple of days! Leah 04 Apr 2012 22:09:33 PDT |

No calls but orcas nearby We are back and luckily you didn't miss any calls. At around 1030 this morning the T18/19s headed past the Lab and up into Blackfish Sound. While they silently traveled through the glassy waters wolves could be heard howling on a nearby island, as sea lions growled from their haul out down the way. Busy sunny morning!!
