Today has been a day filled with cetaceans!!!! At 0800 40-50 Pacific White-Sided dolphins were milling, foraging and generally enjoying themselves in Blackney Pass for half an hour before they grouped up and quickly porpoised to the north. 2 hours later 4 Transient Orca were spread in two groups across the Pass as they quietly headed north. They were later identified by Jared Towers as the T19s. Then at 1315 a humpback traveled south through the Pass into Johnstone Strait. S/he was then spotted again facing south in Blackney at 1600. Then 'Dusty' the Grey whale was spotted in Johnstone heading west by Christie McMillan and Jared T. near Bauza Islets. Dusty is the rare Grey whale that stuck around in this area for the entire summer of 2010. Unbelievable! All the while the sun shone and the sea was like glass! What an incredible day!

We haven't had any transients vocally for a while now but there has been lots of activity in the area! The T002C's and the T023's went West in Cormorant Channel on May 27th, then the T101's, T036's and T124's did the same yesterday! Thanks to Jared Towers for the report. Then today the T010's were spotted by the Sophia islands heading West.

The orca that passed through here early this morning was L-pod!!! Thanks to John Ford of DFO Pacific Biological Station for the confirmation. The presence of the Southern Residents in Johnstone Strait seems to be a fairly common occurrence in late May before they return to their summer range down south. The last sighting of L-pod was near San Francisco a few months ago!

There were 12 Orca heading south through Campbell River around 5pm today. They looked to be resident Orca. Most likely they were some or all of the L-pod Orca that we had in JS early this morning. Thanks to Laura and Garry from Aboriginal Journey's for the report.

I forgot to mention to leah and Marie that yesterday we briefly heard calls (no ID) and (no location) on the system just before 2pm. So something, someone is out there. Although I don't think it was resident orcas, nevertheless, you can just feel the summer season edging closer! CetaceaLab reported seeing the A36 brothers the other day!

It sounded as though a number of Pacific White-Sided dolphins were traveling alongside a large cruise ship in the wee hours this morning. As the boat moved north into Blackfish Sound so did the dolphin chatter. Then at 1700hrs, 5-6 PWD's slowly traveled south in Blackney on this calm and rainy evening.

The T10s and T26s just headed North in Blackney Pass! The were rolling, tail slapping, doing head stands and rubbing each other as they quietly traveled by. They must have been chomping down on some prey as the seagulls hovered above them during their entire time through the Pass.

The elephant seal popped up again mid pass off the lab, just under an hour ago. He had his mouth open and there was a seagull overhead, but by the time I got to the scope his snack was on its way down his throat. I haven't seen him surface since, but they are famous for their long dive intervals!

Things have been pretty quiet here on the cetacean front, but there is plenty of boat traffic. It looks as though a number of private boaters are beginning their voyage to the North. Luckily, there are a pluthera of chatty songbirds to soothe the ears, especially at dusk :)

Just received a report from Jared that T142 and T143 are heading west past Pt. McNeill. Simultaneously a HB surfaced across the Pass heading south and has now gone out of sight! This isn't the first HB in the area, in fact Christie and Jared photo ID'd a HB in front of Alert Bay on the 27th. However, this is the first HB we have seen from the lab this year. Yeah!!!
