A fairly good sized group of orcas just went past Alert Bay. They were fairly close to Cormorant Island and then angled over to Vancouver Island headed toward Hide Creek and Port McNeill.

Mike Durban reported 5-6 orca, possibly 2 sprouters in the group, near Blind Channel, heading north, around 10:00 am this morning. Maybe the A8s are still around?? Thanks Mike!

Performing maintenance
Sorry everyone, we have lost our internet connection again. Probably, the problem is power at CP, but the weather is bad just now, and we cant 't get there to check. It may be a few days before we can resume live streaming. Please accept our apologies.

Boat noise
The A5s are still vocalizing in the Bight but it is hard to hear over what sounds like a fish boat fishing right beside critical point hydrophone.

Distant calls audible.

Yes, Jeff we started to hear calls just before 2pm as well. We think Leah and Marie are off securing the boat at the moment but probably left a tape running. They will be glad to know a time when calls started so thanks for posting! The calls are interesting. If this is the A8s I imagine they are in the Strait somewhere perhaps getting closer to Critical Point.

Just got a call from Donna and Bill Mackay. They report that a young male orca, most likely a tranient, is out front of Port McNeill. He looks like he is on the hunt - breaching, tail slapping and very focused. Bill and Donna thought at first he was on his own but are seeing others as well now. Thanks for the great report!

Four transients just quietly travelled north in Blackney Pass. It seemed as though they snacked on something before going out of view. Hopefully we get to hear some vocals!

6 orcas, (2 males, 2 females and 2 juveniles), have been hanging around in Blackney Pass since 9am. At the moment they are heading south again on the far side of the pass. Their behaviour is very transient like, but their distance has not allowed us to ID them as of yet.

At around 0930 we spotted 6-7 orca heading up Baronet Pass. Too far for IDs but we are thinking they were most likely transients because of their long dives.

While standing outside of the Lab, listening for blows, Northern Lights dimly danced across the Pass amongst a star littered sky...bliss!
