Distant calls audible.

After the foraging off of Cracroft Point, the A30s came into Blackney Pass at 5:52pm, against the tide and travelling north on the far side of the channel. They passed through fairly quickly, clearing our view at 6:16pm. We continued to hear their calls as they travelled through Blackfish Sound, clearing our range at 6:53pm. At 7:55pm, we started hearing A30 calls again in Blackfish Sound and by 9:20pm they had come back into Blackney Pass. Once again, they were travelling against the tide! We are currently listening to their blows in the Pass, they seem to be travelling slowly to the south. However, as they are fighting the ebbing tide, we are still unsure whether they will traverse the whole of Blackney Pass. We will have to wait and see what they do!

Distant calls audible.

The A30's haven't been extremely ambitious throughout the night, but here's our best guess of what went on during today's early hours. The last calls we heard throughout the night were at 12:40am on the Cracroft Point hydrophone. We think that the orcas remained in the strait near Cracroft Point and were pulled into the entrance of Blackney Pass by the strong ebb. Megan, at Cracroft Point, reported at 7:50am that she could see the A30s pointing out towards the Strait from Blackney Pass, but they appeared to be fighting the current. The strong ebb pulled them further into Blackney Pass until we were able to see them at 8:09am. We watched as the orcas, now mid-channel of Blackney Pass, continually pointed themselves to the south, but made little to no progress. They fought the tide for nearly 1.5 hours, stopping only to do some light milling and several spy hops. Finally at 9:46am, very close the Sea Lion Rock camera, they stopped fighting the current and they all turned to the north. They made quick progress towards Blackfish Sound, near the Hanson Island side of Blackney Pass and finally cleared our view at 10:07am. They were quiet as they came past the lab, only vocalizing a few times. We did not hear from them again until shortly after 1:19pm when we received a report that there was a resting line of orcas heading east past Big Bay in the middle of the Strait. Since then the A30s have been foraging off of Cracroft Point, where we are still hearing their calls. You can watch them live on our Cracroft Point camera! https://explore.org/livecams/orcas/orcalab-cracroft-point-surface .

No calls but orcas nearby

The A30s made their way through Blackney Pass after all, travelling slowly through from just after 11pm. They began to vocalise less frequently, and we last heard them around Cracroft Point at 12:40am.
