Distant calls audible.

We are hearing some A5 calls. They are at the east end of the Reserve.

Distant calls audible.

What a beautiful evening! The A23s/A25s came back this morning with the A34s/A46 from the east. They continued west up to big bay before turning back towards Cracroft Point. Megan HB reported the A23s/A25s foraging just off CP around 6:30pm. The A34s/A46 were thought to be on the Vancouver Island side prior to us hearing calls on Parson Island hydrophone around 9:10pm. With a gorgeous moonrise they took the ebbing tide through Blackney Pass, tail slapping and spy hopping as they continued on to the north. We also heard the A23s/A25s when the A34s/A46 were entering Blackney. Sounds like they stayed in the Strait and continued to the east. Busy day!

No calls but orcas nearby

Looks like the A34s with A46 headed north through Blackney Pass a short while ago and that the A23s/A25s stayed in Johnstone Strait (for now at least).

Seems like the orcas have turned to the east! Meagan at CP saw the orcas heading towards them from Big Bay at 5:09pm.

Finally a few distant calls in Johnstone Strait. Sounds like the A34s again.

Boat noise

Obviously we are busy with many things today! Whales were reported travelling back to the west at 11:25am. We heard the A34s arrive off Robson Bight at 12:04pm. They continued west. The last calls we heard were at 12:41pm but CP had a small group pass at 1:56pm.

Good morning! The A34s/A46 kept going to the east in the strait. They were reported off Hickey Point and heading east this morning. Thanks for the report!

Seems like the A34s/A46 are opposite of the entrance to Blackney Pass.

Thanks to the Lukwa we understand that the A34s carried on up the Vancouver Island shore and that the A23s/25s did likewise along the Hanson Island side. By 6:24pm the A34s were approaching the Wastels and still pointed west. Wayne on the Lukwa left them about then and went through to Blackfish Sound. He did not see the orcas follow and since then the calls dropped off and we are not sure where they ended up. The tide is still ebbing until around 10:49pm.

Very social day for the A34s! Lot's of beautiful calls from the Bight and shortly after 3:10pm several orcas went for a quick rub! They were last seen heading west. Great day!

There was a little rub for a couple of the A34s at the Main beach and then the scene shifted back to the west. A group of Biggs orcas was reported heading west about an hour ago off the Bauza Islets. They may have come putt of Blackney Pass! Perhaps Baronet Passage.

The A34s with A46 in the lead eventually rushed through Blackney Pass and cleared our view by 12:23pm. They timed it well as the A23s and A25s took Weynton Pass into Johnstone Strait and the A34s arrived off CP ahead of them.

Of course there is boat noise! But Kate reports that the A34s are on their way in, possibly with others!

After busy night it has been a quiet day. We have several humpbacks as our company in Blackney Pass. We are trying to ID them!

Busy night! It seemed like the A34s/A46/A23s/A25s were going to stay same area whole night. But around 4:30am all of them started to travel to the west. They arrived in the entrance to Blackney Pass around 4:45am then entered Blackney around 5am. They were pretty chatty when they were in Blackney Pass. We could hear some breaching and tail or pectoral slapping sounds. The blows cleared into Blackfish Sound around 5:20am. They made calls when they entered Blackfish Sound. But now they are quiet. Whew!

Nice night now the the tug has come through! But before it did here is a summary of what we think has been going on. The beautiful A34/A46 calls in Blackfish Sound ceased for a while as they ( A34s/A46) travelled through Blackney Pass to the south at 12:30am. They picked up their calls once they got into Johnstone Strait. This continued until the A23s and A25s came up from the east around 1:20am. The A23s/A25s continued their calling even through the worst of the boat noise but the A34s were silent to us. Now both groups, as they "come together", are both calling. And we have taken most of the boat noise out of the recording!
