Again! Very vocal Bigg's orcas in Johnstone Strait. This time they sound closer to Robson Bight! Whistles, calls.

No orcas present.

We had a group of Bigg's orcas this morning head north in Blackney Pass around 10am. They were very spread out. It might have been the same group as yesterday. After they got to Blackfish Sound they were vocal briefly. If you are a member of OrcaLab 100 you can hear a clip of the Bigg's orcas from yesterday. OrcaLab 100 is easy to join - just a minimal donation of $5 will get you in! Of course we welcome bigger donations to gel our work :)

No calls but orcas nearby

A quick update about the very vocal Bigg's orcas this morning. They came west in Johnstone Strait. Fortunately the tug with two barges near Robson Bight was headed east and the other tug heading west cleared into Blackney Pass by the time the orcas approached the entrance to Blackney Pass. They remained very vocal while off Blackney. We could hear echo location and thought they were going to come into view. However, they turned and continued west up the Strait. We were able to follow them acoustically and on the CP network camera. There were quite a few there including a young male, a mature male, several smaller fins and one very energetic orangey baby. We did not determine IDs. last seen just before 10am headed west toward the end of Hanson Island.

No orcas present.

We would like to thank David and Brittney Cannamore for their dedication, enthusiasm, hard work, energy, humour, reliability and staying power during their 6 months at OrcaLab. They were a delight and embraced their OrcaLab experience fully. While learning to live on the island Brittney finished her courses, David wrote and wrote. His blogs about their winter experiences can be found on the Orcalab (www.orcalab.org) blog page and http://raincoastwanderings.comThey are now back in Juneau having made the long journey north and about to embark on their summer adventures which we hope goes well. Thank you once again David and Brittney! Give Penny and Porter a hug.

No orcas present.

Just talking with Marie Fournier who saw a minke off Alert Bay. She is pretty sure it is the minke named Eclipse who was the same minke to show up off the Lab a little over a year ago. Thanks to the work by Jared Towers & MERS we now know that there are only a few minkes who inhabit these local waters but that they are incredibly loyal and return year after year.

No calls but orcas nearby

We just had a couple hundred Pacific White sided dolphins head North in front of the lab. There are a least 6 Bigg's (transients) near Gab's rock!

Hi everybody. Not sure what's causing Orca Live to malfunction at the moment. We'll piece it together and have it working again asap. So sorry.

No orcas present.

The lab camera is still giving us fits. But after several days of torrential rain, the sun is out and the wind has died down. Great day for kayaking, or maybe some orcas? :)
