Superb sounds!!
We are hearing beautiful calls from the A30s and the I15s on our Critical Point hydrophone. It seems the I15s went down Weynton Passage, met up with the A30s and they headed east together towards Robson Bight.

We got a report 10 mins ago that the I15s are off Sophia Islands, angling towards Cracroft Point, mid strait.

We started picking up the echolocation and some calls on the Critical Point hydrophone at 4:12pm. Possibly from the A30s and I15s. They are quiet at the moment. We got a report from Megan at Cracroft Point that the whales were coming up to Izumi Rock at 3:23pm. There was another group (two small fins and one sprouter) in line with Izumi group, mid strait.

The A30s and I15s kept going to the west in Johnstone Strait. The group on Cracroft / Hanson Island side were crossing over to Vancouver Island side at 12:24pm. We got a report at 2:08pm that the whales turned to the east in the strait. We are waiting to hear them again!

Yesterday and the day before were the most complicated days we have had tracking the whales in a while. Complicated because we lost track of the A42s around 11pm on August 25 when they were still in company with the I15s and the A30s and possibly exiting through Weynton Passage just after midnight. We heard calls until 2am and think everyone had departed through Weynton just after this. The next day (August 26), the A30s and most of the I15s came back into Johnstone Strait from Queen Charlotte Strait via Weynton Pass before 9am. Interestingly, a small group of Bigg's orcas passed north through Blackney Pass just before 8am. We think the Bigg's turned back in the fog towards Johnstone Strait to avoid the resident orcas heading into Weynton Pass at the same time. Megan became aware of the unexpected Bigg's as they hurried east past her. She managed to get some photos which she sent on to Jared Towers who identified them as the T90s (perhaps with T124s as well). The Bigg's carried on east around the Sophias and on to Swaine Point as the A30s and the I15s travelled east In Johnstone Strait from Weynton Pass. The I15s and the A30s carried on eastward. Around Noon the A30s turned back to the west while the I15s carried on past the Main rubbing beach (1pm). The A30s arrived off Cracroft Point around 1:14pm and stayed there milling for the better part of the next hour. After 2pm, Bill Mackay on the Naiad Explorer found the rest of the I15s (the I4s) off Donegal Head. They were coming out of Queen Charlotte Strait and heading to Weynton Pass. Again this was interesting because the day before the I14s had been keeping company with the A42s so we speculated that the A42s were not going to be far behind. This turned out not to be the case so we then wondered if the I4s had been seeing the A42s out of the area. Before the I4s arrived back in the Strait the rest of the I15s had turned back and were by 4:13pm approaching the Sophia Islands east of CP (Cracroft Point). All the groups then gathered off the entrance of Blackney Pass. From there they came north into the pass and travelled to Blackfish Sound. All the I15s were together again and the A30s were likewise grouped up but travelling a bit closer to the Hanson Island side and a little back of the I15s. By 5:14pm they had all cleared into Blackfish Sound and out of our view. Just after 6pm, we saw the I15s return to Blackney. They were still very close together mid channel and working against the last of the ebbing tide. There was no sign of the A30s. The I15s cleared our view just before 7pm and then moved with the now flooding tide to the east in Johnstone Strait. We believe the A30s came back via Weynton Pass just before 8pm and travelled east toward the Ecological Reserve. The I15s, who had again travelled east of the Bight returned and joined the A30s there for the majority of early morning. The last calls we heard before both groups disappeared to the east were at 4:10am.

Just after 9am we heard a report of orcas heading west in the Ecological Reserve. Not long afterwards we heard a few I15 calls near to Critical Point. Wayne now reports orcas are approaching Izumi on the Vancouver Island side and the Sophias on the Cracroft side. All are heading west.

All quiet now. We think the A30s and I15s headed east from the Bight.

So that was the A30s came into Johnstone strait through Weynton. After gone to the east for a while, the whales came back to the Bight. We are hearing close A30s and faint I15 calls on Critical Point hydrophone, in loud boat noise.
