No calls but orcas nearby

Back and forth, back and forth go the A42s. They have had quite the day along the Vancouver Island shore, even interacting with the humpback, ZigZag for a while near Izumi Rock. They have not been travelling beyond the Ecological Reserve, not even going as far as the Main rubbing Beach, preferring instead to rub at Strider Beach. Each time there it was an extended rub lasting over an hour!. And to the west, likewise, they are not really venturing very far as well. The area between Strider and Kaikash has satisfied them for most of the day. True to this pattern, according to North Island Kayak, they are headed back east. At 9:14pm they were off Kaikash beach. We are happy to get visual reports because this small family has not been very vocal either.

The A42s rubbed at Strider Beach for over an hour then headed back to the west. Thank you for the report, Marie! Now we are hearing them on Critical Point hydrophone.

We last heard from the A42s at 1:30am, when they were on the critical point hydrophone. It appears that after that they headed east for the night. We have had a report from Marie that the whales have been seen currently having a leisurely rub at Strider Beach (unfortunately not one we have cameras at). Hopefully they will continue west and make some calls! We shall keep you updated.
