No calls but orcas nearby

Sorry, we waited for so long for the whales to come down Blackfish Sound! Te rest of the whales carried on to the west. At least some of the A5s if not all returned along with the I15s just after we watched the A30s finally head to the Strait from Blackney Pass. We were not convinced we were seeing the A11s travelling with the A30s. Did we miss them? Did they go Weynton? Regardless, the whales all moved east and the last A5 calls we heard were around 7:15pm. Our biggest thrill was that a humpback came right into the shallows this evening and swam around twice before leaving. We held our breath as it was a dropping tide and we had never had a humpback do this. The eel grass must have been tickling his/her tummy!

Multiple pod calls audible.

Just starting to pick up the A30s on the Flower Island hydrophone as they approach Blackfish Sound. The Naiad reports that they are with the A11s! Meanwhile the others are westbound in Johnstone Strait.

The whales touched in briefly at the Main rubbing beach but returned to their favourite beach (this year at least) at Strider. Marie reports that 20+ went in for a "party" rub! Meanwhile Bill on the Naiad is reporting that not only are the A30s near Penfolds but that they have company too. He is still working on IDs but has suggested either the Ds or C10s. Regardless of who there seems to be more incoming through Queen Charlotte Strait and again the A30s are the escort.

Orcas near mics.

Here is a summary for last night: Just after midnight we began to hear A5 calls at the east end of the Reserve, the I15s and G27s were there as well as these groups headed west. The Gs arrived off Robson Bight by 12:27am. The groups stalled between 12:30am till just before 2am. By as they did so the G27s were perhaps the closest to the Bight as they were very clear around 12:38am while the I15s were closer to the Cracroft Island side. The A5s were trailing as everyone started to move west. By 2:16am the I15s were far enough west to be heard by the Cracroft Point hydrophone. The A5s were still "behind" them. At 3am the A42s were close to the Bight. The I15s, meanwhile, turned back eastward by 3:20am. As the A5s turned east as well their calls became loud off Robson Bight and it was clear by the echo location that they were well determined to go east. The I15s were never loud on their eastern turn and may have elected to follow the Cracroft Island side to the east. By 3:48am the calls on Critical Point ended. We picked up calls again off the eastern end of the Reserve (where this exercise began) at3:55am. The groups were past the Reserve by 4:15am. We now have groups heading west again in the Strait.
