| Superb sounds!! Sounds like all the orcas (A5s A30s I15s) are heading back west again. Calls are on the CrPt hydrophone. Helena 20 Aug 2012 23:38:21 PDT |
Distant calls audible. I think we are hearing the groups, despite the ebbing tide, going further to the east. The low tide might have discouraged a longer rub. They will be back. What happened earlier was just amazing! Helena 20 Aug 2012 21:45:47 PDT |
Superb sounds!! Now it's a beach party! Some of the I15s & A30s have reached the Main rubbing beach, seems likely others will follow & the party will roll on. Helena 20 Aug 2012 21:04:52 PDT |
Distant calls audible. After all the excitment the whales are carrying to the east past Robson Bight. We can now just hear them on the Rubbing Beach system east of Critical Point. Are the Beaches next? Helena & Paul not at the Boat Bay party but enjoying the whale one instead 20 Aug 2012 20:33:48 PDT |
Superb sounds!! Seems like the I15s A30s & A5s are having a big party in Robson Bight. Incredible sounds! Helena 20 Aug 2012 20:15:55 PDT |
Multiple pod calls audible. The whales have all made the BIG turn and are all headed east now approaching the Ecological Reserv. Meanwhile, we had a small group of Bigg's (Transient) orcas worry a sea lion mid channel in Blackney Pass. They didn't make a kill but interestingly a sea lion surfaced to the side of the Lab and did a lot of small circles and a lot of breathing. This sea lion was then joined by another. The transients were last seen heading south further over in the Pass. They may have gone out to the Strait. Helena 20 Aug 2012 18:35:12 PDT |
Multiple pod calls audible. Definitely the I15s now coming eastward in the Strait. The A30s/23s/25s are moving up from the other direction. Helena 20 Aug 2012 16:03:29 PDT |
Multiple pod calls audible. The A23s are with A39 off Boat Bay heading west quickly, the others are on the Vancouver Island shore. meanwhile, the I15s must be closing from the other side. I think I even heard one of their calls. Helena 20 Aug 2012 15:49:32 PDT |
Distant calls audible. Hearing the A30s and the A5s returning west and approaching the Ecological Reserve/Boat Bay area. Helena 20 Aug 2012 14:40:57 PDT |
No calls but orcas nearby Earlier, we heard the A30s & A5s on both the Rubbing Beach and Critical Point hydrophones, so we thought they were headed back to the west, but recently we've only heard them on RB, so aren't sure about their direction. Don't know what happened to the I15s either. Foggy morning here. Helena 20 Aug 2012 08:27:59 PDT |
Distant calls audible. We are waiting for things to develop. We lost track of the I15s at 1:42am. At the time we wondered if they had moved across Blackfish Sound toward Weynton Pass. The tide was still in ebb and they would have been pushing against the tide to get into Johnstone Strait so we thought it might take a while. The tide is in flood now and still no further sign of them. Meanwhile the A30s and A5s moved west opposite the Reserve. They were always distant with dolphins just ahead of them. Several boats have made things difficult and the As have since gone quiet too. So we will see what happens. Helena 20 Aug 2012 04:21:52 PDT |
Boat noise Too bad, boat noise has taken over the underwater soundscape! Helena 20 Aug 2012 02:17:00 PDT |
Multiple pod calls audible. We have good news... the I15s are back in town! They are coming down Blackfish Sound at the moment, heading for Johnstone Strait via Blackney Pass. So great to hear their lovely calls again! Meanwhile, we're hearing the other "A" orcas, along with dolphins, on the Rubbing Beach hydrophone. Helena 20 Aug 2012 01:36:17 PDT |
