Orcas hunting fish.

During the night there was some movement back and forth. The A30s and A5s (A4s and G clan whales were nearby as well) had a rub togetherbetween 12:26am and !2:30am. The A30s turned back toward Robson Bight leaving the A5s rubbing until 1:50am. The A30s arrived at Critical Point at 1:30am. Eventually, the A5s also moved west as did the G clan calls. Over the next while the whales (most likely the A30s) continued west to the entrance of Blackney Pass between 4:30am and 5:30am. North Island Kayak heard a group go by their camp at Little Kaikash at 5am. The group was then seen off Telegraph Cove at 6:15am. (thanks to Mary Borrowman for the report). The group continued toward Beaver Cove and then turned at 6:40am back to the east. We heard A5 calls off the rubbing beaches again at 6:18am and just now fairly close echo location as perhaps they went back to Critical Point. As for the other groups (A12s,A36s, I15s,A4s), we think they are still east of Robson Bight for the time being. Hopefully, the mystery G clan group will have stayed not far from the A30s and we may get new clues sometime today.

The plot thickens. The camp at Boat Bay (opposite Robson Bight) saw two males head for the west mid strait and wondered if it might be the A36s.

There is just horrible boat noise. this morning. The I15s after milling off of Weynton Island have recently turned back to the east. The A30s,A4s and A5s are west bound (they turned at 9:50am) between the Cliff and Vancouver Island (10:11am). It was probably the A30s off Telegraph Cove at 6:15 and they who turned back east at 6:40am. At that time the A4s and A5s were closer to the Reserve and for a time as the A30s neared they were east bound until 9:50am. So we have groups travelling now towards each other. The I15s from the western end of Hanson Island. The A30s,A4s and A5s from the opposite direction off the Sophia Island. The A34s are reported off Chatham Point and A12 with the A36s are further west off Ripple Point. Both groups are pointed east.

Here is a bit of an update. The I15s crossed earlier to the Vancouver Island shore. The Cliff first saw them travelling east from Kaikash Creek (opposite CP) at 11:45am. They are now in the Bight and account for the louder calls we are listening to. The A30s, A5s and presumably the A4s, after being off CP for a while, travelled east to the Baron Reefs (a short distance) and then turned around to go back to CP at 12:55pm. This is where they are at present. The Naiad reports that they are quite relaxed. We can hear their distant calls off the entrance to Blackney Pass. The very loud boat noise from the fishing opening continues. Ouch!

The A8s apparently continued west up the Hanson Island shore and turned off Turn Point at 2:03pm. The A30s and the rest of the A5s and A24s had turned just a bit earlier at 1:53pm while off CP. The A30s are now passing Izumi on their way to Robson bight. The other groups are angled toward the Bight as well. A60 was travellling with some of the A30s. The I15s carried on going east from the east end boundary which they cleared at 2:15pm. No word on the A12s and A36s far to the east.

The A5s and the A30s drew near to Robson Point and then turned back to the west at 4:10pm. They passed the Cliff in their respective groups except for A39 who was going between the A5s and the A24s and A38 who was foraging on his own. The A24s have been quite quiet all day. No sign of the I15s.

The pacing continues. All day the A30s,A24s,A5s have gone back and forth in the Strait. We think they may have done so recently in favour of the west from the Robson Bight area. They have been difficult to track because of the turns and the heavy boat noise from the fishing opening.

Not entirely close but the whales are moving closer to Robson Bight. Just after 3am there A1 calls. Then 15 minutes later, a few more. It sounded like the whales (A30s perhaps) were going back to Johnstone Strait via Blackney Pass. Only sporadic calls followed and just a short while ago a few more, closer and more varied as if the whales were waking up a bit. Pretty quiet agin since.

The A30s, A4s and A5s finally turned and went to the east and the Ecological Reserve. Around 2:40pm they cleared Critical Point and went off to the beaches. They spent quite a bit at Strider (the beach west of the Main beach) before going in to the Main beach. The I15s,A12 and A36s had spent a long time at the beaches. As the others cleared Critical Point, this group continued to Naka Creek. We believe from the reports on the VHF radio that the I15 etc group are off the Broken Island and may have turned around as they are now headed northwest across the Strait.

A short while ago we heard one very distant call. We imagine that this came from the very top end of Blackfish Sound as earlier whales were reported east of Donegal Head. These whales have since drifted around and into Cormoran Channel approaching Mitchell Bay. This is a bit unusual, perhaps restful, drifting whales, perhaps some of the same groups (I15s,A4s) from last night. The map will show the generall vicinity but not accurately as the whales are to the left of Donegal Head off Mitchell Bay still going west.

We are hearing calls from the A12s, A36s, I15s and A24s as they socialize opposite Cracroft Point and Kaikash Creek. The calls are very buried in the boat noise and hard to hear but the Lukwa who is on scene says the calls are very nice at the moment. The A12s and A36s came west to this meeting spot while the I15s and A24 came east. We thought we were hearing calls to the east of the east end of the Reserve a while ago but have not heard anything for a bit. We believe the A30s A5s and the mystery I group are still somewhere in that direction. Rain finally came today, a welcome relief inspite of the laundry hanging on the lines waiting to dry.

Oh boy! it is one of those days! The A30s and the A5s came west in mixed groups, a few of these right below Marie and Luke on the Cliff. They had A50,A72,A84 along with A61, then A43,A69, A95,A39 and A28. That left probably the rest of the A30s and A8s in the Bight, hopefully, with the missing "I' group. The others that went west of CP earlier, the I15s,A43s,A12s and A36s turned back to the east at 5:20pm when they were opposite Hanson Island. Sounds like converging groups again.

Just as we were getting ready to eat dinner (and we were late) the whales came in. Rushing out with plates in hand we watched and recorded as a very large group sail through Blackney Pass on their way to Blackfish Sound. It started off slowly with some of the whales in Blackney pausing and even looking back to Johnstone Strait through the entrance gap. Then they began to move and though, not quite a rush, it seemed very quick and complicated as the groups were very mixed. The weather was very misty so we were relying on acoustic clues as well. We checked off the mystery group who became very vocal and led the way. The A30s,A5s and A4s were there too. Then a few I15 like calls, certainly not many for a group of 17. Whew. Then we realized we did not hear the A36s nor any A12 calls. Were they silent of did they stay in the Strait? Did some of the I15s stay as well? We are going to have to wait and see. Exciting though.

This is a summary and a report. Last night the A23s,A24s and A25s must have turned back to the east shy of Cracroft Point during our last evening session. They were seen around 8:30pm heading east closer to the Reserve. Then this morning as we recorded them off of Critical Point (Robson Bight) the A24s were moving and perhaps following the others eastward past boat bay and the Bight before 6am. later in the day all the groups were located milling off of the Adams River which means they had not gone far. Finally, they have, according to the Naiad Explorer, turned and are westbound approaching Escape Reef and Forward Bay. This is the most current news.

The A23s actually made the turn to the east closer to Little Kaikash Crrek (west of Kaikash) at 9:40am. They got as fat as the Bight and then angled out across Johnstone Strait at 11:30am. They then went west directly in front of Marie on the Cliff and are now approaching the Sophia Islands.

Thank goodness there is a network of observers out there! The A23s are ever so quiet. lately, they crossed the entrance way of Blackney Pass, first to reach Hanson Island and then back again to Cracroft Point where they are now. Apparently, according to the Naiad Explorer they are currently stalled off of CP, spy hopping and generally relaxing. The tide has turned to full flood by now.

Orcas near mics.

Since the last report: Straitwatch had told us that the A23s were spy-hopping a lot off of CP-the entrance to Blackney Pass. Eventually, they moved on to the Ecological Reserve. They went quite far into the Bight. At that time we heard a few calls and some echo location as they passed Critical Point to the east. Marie was able to tell us that they went to the east end of the Reserve but did not go in for a rub at any of the beaches and remained offshore until they turned west at around 5pm. Sounds like they are back at Critical Point. Again sparse calls and a bit of echo location. At the same time (1:30pm) that the A23s were off of CP we got a report from Bill Mackay that the A30s had been seen off of Pine Island (western Queen Charlotte Strait).

No orcas present.

Last night we were very hopeful after more reports of orcas near Scarlett Point, Gordon Channel and a short while later, 7 miles from Numas Island. There was even a report of whales in Hardy Bay which sounded like possible transients. Donna Mackay kindly relayed the various sightings. So we were convinced and even laid bets for which time the orcas would be heard during the night's strong flooding tide. Sadly, we had a peaceful and uninterrupted sleep and woke this morning to the sound of fish finders and motors. Dave Towers relayed a report he heard that there is a large Chinook run going down the west side of Vancouver Island. If that is the case, the orcas might just follow it and give us (the Johnstone Strait area) a pass. Of course, we hope that will not happen. Stay tuned.

The last report we had was that the A23s were just east of Kelsey Bay (they are making progress west) at 12:45pm. Then at 5:40pm we thought (or imagined very faint calls. Nothing developed so we were not confident about this being real. A good sized westerly stirring "out there". The gill-netters will continue to fish until tomorrow.

Finally! Distant A5 calls in Johnstone Strait means that the A23s have indeed made it to the western part of the Strait and that the earlier echo location and distant calls marked the beginning of their return. Nice even despite the constant boat noise.

Encouraging news from below. Jack reported to Marie on the Cliff that the A23s were at Little Bear Bay just before noon and heading west quickly. later at 2:30pm as he was leaving jack reported that the A23s were up to Humpback Bay. They were apparently very vocal and active. Yea! Lots of fish showing up today. Last year we didn't see any "jumpers" but today the passes are alive with salmon moving through. Yea!

"I last saw the A23s at 430pm today heading east into Nodales Channel along the Thurlow shoreline, grouped up and swimming slowly along after a little rub on the rocks at the S.tip of Turn Island. Then a few spy-hops and frolics by the calf, A95 and back to travelling in calm waters and warm evening sunshine. The ebb has arrived in the last hour so they may have already turned. " Aaron@Sonora

Just had a nice chat with Bill Mackay who spent the day with the A30s aboard the Naiad Explorer. At first the A30s went east again to Hunt Rock from the Pine Island area. Then they returned to Pine Island and at 4:30pm they turned east once more. Bill left them off Scarlett Point mid strait travelling with a bit more purpose. Bill said it was so beautiful "out there" and that you could hear a pin drop it was so quiet. Hurricane Jack reported to Marie that the A23s turned west at 3:30pm and an hour later they were back at Ripple Point. Jack noted that they went behind the narrow gap behind Howe Island to get to Chatham Point. Jack also reported that there are still a lot of Chinook salmon in Nodales. Blackfish Sound open tomorrow for fishing.

Boat noise

Ok, so the night was "orca quiet" BUT there was quite a lot of boat noise as today there will be a fishing opening for the seine boats. This is the first time since 2006 that commercial seine boats have been allowed to set their nets in Johnstone Strait. It reflects the fact that the sockeye have returned in fairly good numbers. Very importantly, the food fishery has been also able to catch salmon for distribution amongst First Nations groups. Last year, the food fishery was virtually non existent. Sockeye are not on the orcas preferred menu list. Chinook (they are not targeted by the commercial fishery directly but are by the sports fishery) and Chum (their run comes later in the year) have been found to be the fish eating orcas favourites. The orcas absenting from this area might suggest that the whales are in search of better Chinook (aka Spring, King, Smiley, Tyee) hotspots somewhere else along the coast. Dense fog is blanketing the area this morning. The large number of forest fires on the BC Mainland is apparently contributing to this situation which is too bad as we were anticipating being able to witness the northern lights caused by the recent solar storms.

We've heard no "resident" orcas calling overnight, though we did hear transients briefly at around 11:30pm. We thought they were probably in western Johnstone Strait, but boat noise took over almost immediately, and we don't know what happened afterwards. No reports of orcas this morning so far.

We've just started to hear distant "A" calls on the rubbing beach hydrophone, and a few minutes ago heard a report that orcas are westbound at the eastern boundary of the Ecological Reserve. Sounds like at at least some of the orcas that have been fishing in Nodales Channel lately are returning from the east!

The groups this morning are quite spread out with the A11 in the lead. A11 herself is full of vim and vigor this morning. She delighted Marie with a full breach 400 meters off the Cliff as she travelled west. A56 and her calf were with her at that time. Right now, she is headed to Cracroft Point on her own. The A8s are on the other side and just a bit further east but also going west. behind them are the A1s and we are waiting for a closer look before we determine who is where exactly.

This is exciting! We started hearing calls in Blackfish Sound around 6:33pm. This was after whales left Johnstone Strait and travelled through Weynton Pass. The Lukwa soon called in to say some of the whale were headed "down" Blackfish. This mean they are coming our direction. Lovely!

Well we never saw the whales afterall. The tide was ebbing strongly and that certainly did not encourage them. However, we are hearing the A34s in Johnstone Strait again. At this point we don't have many clues as to who went out Weynton Pass, whether it was all the groups or not.

Well, it has been a beautiful sunny day here, and for the first time in ages, it was not windy. There were no orcas in the immediate area but Freckles and Twister, two familiar humpbacks, spent most of the day in Blackney Pass along with a minke, Dalls porpoise, dolphins and sea lions. Hard to complain. The A12s,A36s, A8s and A11s/A73 had a good day as well chowing down on Spring salmon in Nodales Channel (eastern JS). The Mackays, on the Naiad Explorer, had an exciting day with a large group of resident orcas north of Port Hardy. Possibly the C6s and the I11s as well as others were there. Unfortunately, they were headed out to sea by the early afternoon.

We think we can account for the A34s, the A8s, probably the A11/73 and earlier there were enough males for the A36s to be there as well. That probably puts A12 in the mix as well. The A34s are continuing west past Kaikash Creek and the A8/11/73 group is further east of them. The A36s disappeared into the afternoon glare and big winds.

We have an internet connection and audio back. Whatever problem BC Tel was having seems to be resolved. This morning, the C6s continued to travel away from the area via Queen Charlotte Strait. They were first sighted at 9am westbound off of Lizard Pt. At 12:30pm they were off of bere Point sill going west. An unidentified group was seen of off Port Hardy at 8am. This group ha since gone out Goletas Channel and by 12:30pm they were off Sushartie Bay still westbound as well. Below, in the lower, east end of Johnstone Strait, the A11s, A8s, A12/A36s have been identified. So far the A34s have not been accounted for.

The treat today were the dolphins who moved into Blackney Pass from Blackfish Sound this afternoon. The orcas continued to move away in opposite directions. At 1:10pm, the Mackays left the C6s 21/2 miles northwest of Malcolm Point. The A8s/A11s and A12 and the A36s were off Davis Point around noon. Time to catch up. We were saying farewell to Sam and while we were doing so the C6s came into Johnstone Strait unannounced at 9:20am and then travelled eastward silently and sleepily. They started off going "down" the Hanson Island shore but crossed from Turn Point to Kaikash Creek and carried on down the Vancouver Island shore toward Robson Bight. They have since spread out a bit but are till silent. Meanwhile, we believe the A34s along with A12 and the A36s left for Queen Charlotte Strait around 3:30am and may now be the group off of bere Point heading westward. A12 and the A36s are finally making their way into Johnstone Strait! They have spent the majority of the day in Queen Charlotte Strait. late in the afternoon they loked like they might choose Blackney Pass as the route in but they thought better of it and went via Weynton Pas instead. Most of the Campbell River boats came all this way today only to find out about 10 orcas in blind channel (eastern Johnstone Strait). No ids on this group yet but there is speculation from this end that it might be the A8s/11s/73 group once again. So far no indication that this is what has happened although the tide is in flood and this might encourage the A30s this direction. Fingers crossed.

No calls but orcas nearby

There was a bit of a mystery today. Three whales headed west through Robson Bight this morning. They were all small fins and difficult to see in the windy conditions. We heard just enough echo location to locate the whales in the Strait. The Cliff later informed us of their journey up Vancouver Island to Little Kaikash. The whale watch boats let us know when they turned back to the east in the afternoon. Meanwhile, we were all scratching our heads wondering who was there in this unusual combination of two female adult fins and a little one. One little call helped to point us in the right direction - Rs. But only one group, the R13s, was anywhere near that small and we still could not explain the third whale. After a phone call to Jared Towers there was some clarification. DFO's Graeme Ellis had encountered the same group earlier and further north. It turns out that W3 after losing another and her last son this year chose to travel with R13 and her little one, R47. They are still eastbound at last report and still very, very quiet. W3 along with A12 are the oldest matriarchs in the community.

We began hearing distant "A1" calls on the Critical Point hydrophone a short while ago, not sure who, not sure where, but somebody is out there.

Some of the mystery may have been solved. At 8am, two males were seen off of Telegraph Cove. A third whale was also reported at the ame time. We heard only distant A12 calls at 6:40am. Perhaps, the A36s with A12 managed to make their way back here from the east on this very strong ebb tide. Very, very windy today so sighting conditions are poor and these whales have disappeared and we have not heard anything since. There is a report of whales to the east still. At 9am they were headed to Thurston Bay. last night Hurricane Jack reprted they were in Cordero Channel at 8pm. Also, from yesterday, Bill and Donna Mackay had an exciting encounter with a very large group of orcas off of Gordon Channel neat Port Hardy. Included in that group were possibly the C10s, Ds, I22s and I18s. All of these are A clan whales. So despite the "silence" there is actually a lot happening. Even the sun is shining!

These distant calls are coming from two different directions. The A34s have come in from Weynton Pass and are quickly heading east. The A36s (A12 has yet to be located) are travellling quickly westward to meet up with the new arrivals.

The A30s just went by the Lab moving very slowly against the strong ebbing tide. But they were not alone. In the late eveing light we watched another group, perhaps the C6s, adjust themselves into the back eddy close to hanson Island. They finally made way towards Johnstone Strait. We have not yet heard them. The tide will turn in about two hours so hopefully it will be come easier,

Really don't know what to make of this yet. We have not heard any C like calls but there were a few very loud "R" like calls clsoe to Robson Bight. This probably needs more clues before we can say who beyond the A30s came in tonight,. Stay tuned! They are nearing the Bight now.

The A8s are on their way back from the east. The A11s are most likely not too far away from them as well, although, we have not heard them yet. We lost track of the A36s and A12 when they were still not far from the Ecological Reserve around 6pm. At that time they were west bound again after some shuffling back and forth.

We are very much left in between this morning. A large group of orcas was reported off Pine Is. (Queen Charlotte Strait) this morning. Originally, they were reported eastbound but a later update from the Naiad Explorer corrected this to west bound from the eastern end of Gordon Channel. No firm ids yet. AND, the A8s,A11s, A73 and A12 and the A36s are east bound at Hickey Point (lower Johnstone Strait).

No orcas present.

A bit of a blank this morning along with a blanket of fog. So far nothing to report. The night was quiet and the Boat Bay crew never heard blows from the A36s/A12 passing the area around Robson Bight so their whereabouts are unknown. We believe the A8s and A11s continued east out of the Reserve yesterday.

The fog is lifting a bit and along with it there is some clarity about the whale movement. As we lost track of the A36s and A12 before 9pm we had the impression that they were in Johnstone Strait. After a few calls this morning we were able to determine that they were still there and finally a report from Angela mentioned that they were off Izumi Rock (west of Robson Bight) heading west. There had been a report of a lone fin off of Donegal Head this morning and this was most likely a minke whale. The other residents ,the A8s and A11s are far to the east in Nodales Channel. The A36s and A12 are only intermittently vocal as they continue westward in the Strait.

Here is a note for yesterday. Late after noon and early evening 7 transients headed west in Johnstone Strait. The Robson Bight Wardens gave the heads up and this was followed up by Jared Towers who gave the following report: "The transients that left Campbell River early this morning passed Alert Bay still westbound about an hour ago. We witnessed them kill a Dall's porpoise in Weynton prior to this. They were quite a random mix, 7 total. T014, T124C, T065A, T065A2, T065A3, T036A1, and CA058." The Lab was busy following their progress and even our boat, headed home from Alert Bay, managed to catch a glimpse of them as they crossed the entrance of Weynton Pass at the Stephenson Islands. A lone humpback was also in Blackney during the arrival of the June Cove. Quite the day for everyone.
