We had an incredible experience up at Eagle Eye this morning…we observed a Dalls porpoise birth!!! Just after 9am we noticed a bunch of ripples on the water. We used the scope to have a better look, and on closer inspection we saw a huge pool of blood. A few seconds later we saw a very tiny grey head pop up taking his/her first breath of fresh air, with mum very close to it’s side. The new baby was tiny, all grey and with a floppy bent over dorsal. You could even clearly see the fetal folds from being in mothers womb! Over the next hour the mother and 3 other adult porpoises circled around with the the new addition, making sure the baby was coming to the surface to breath. During this time the calf, being a novice swimmer, would stick their head way above the surface (also known as chin slapping) so the adults helped out if needed, as not to get water in the blowhole. It sure is a magical experience to witness a birth and we feel extremely lucky to have seen a new baby porpoise come into this world…a once in a lifetime opportunity!
