Orcas rubbing on the shore bottom.
We just heard some rubbing from the A42s at the rubbing beaches. They are moving west. The I15s have stopped calling in Blackfish Sound or have moved out of range of the hydophones. OL Crew 21 Jul 2014 19:29:55 PDT |

Life is becoming even more interesting! The Rs are coming closer. They are still in Queen Charlotte Strait but Kate and Troy reported a short while ago that they were off Black Bluff. Meanwhile, the I15s have gone very quiet. Another afternoon nap in the Strait? The A42s/A34s were still coming back to the west and we are waiting for Aaron to confirm who he is watching in Frederick Arm. All very busy. Meanwhile, Guardian has been in Blackney Pass all day along with the much smaller Dalls Porpoise. Also heard mention of Slash/Humpless and Black Pearl. Helena & OL crew 21 Jul 2014 15:40:00 PDT |

Distant calls audible.
The guys to the east must think we are losing it. Again I need to correct the notes. Someone thought the A42s were in the Strait this morning and we went with it thinking that the A1 calls we heard in Blackfish Sound with the I15s might have been A46 travelling ahead of his friends the A42s. We never heard any A42 calls and really wondered how they could be silent so long. It turns out they are east with the A34s who we had suspected had slipped east yesterday afternoon. A46, it turns out is in Frederick Arm by himself! So who did we hear with the I15s? We are checking the tape. I hope this has not been too confusing, one of those days!. Meanwhile, there are other whales in Queen Charlotte Strait and the I15s who have been reluctant to leave the Cracroft Point area are still vocal from time to time. The I15s have been interesting this morning. While in Blackfish Sound we heard A36 calls. We were hopeful it might be the missing A37. Probably and more likely it was A46 passing the I15s on his way west. After the I15s came through and into Johnstone Strait they proceeded toward the Reserve. Just shy of the Reserve they turned in advance of the A42s who had come up from the east. A46 was not with them so that is when we started to put the piuzzel together. The I15s and the A42s are still making their way to the west, spread out headed for the Weynston Pass area. At 6am the Pilot Boat reported via the Naiad that a large group was again headed east in Gordon Channel. The whales are excited and so are we. Summer has arrived. Good Morning! Took a while for us to get ourselves organized but in the meantime the whales did so for themselves. The I15s along with A1s are headed south into Blackney Pass. Helena 21 Jul 2014 06:35:21 PDT |
