Distant calls audible.
We've been following the A4 group since early this evening as they travelled west from the bight. Their calls began to fade around 9:30pm as they rounded the corner into Weynton Passage. Meanwhile, at 9:12pm we began to hear a few loud A5 calls on Critical Point. The A5 group was not very vocal and went quiet shortly after. As the A4s rounded into Blackfish Sound, we could hear occasional calls on the Flower Island hydrophone throughout the evening. As the light faded, we started to hear blows, as well as A4 calls, in front fo the lab. The orcas moved very slowly to the South through Blackney Pass. We thought we had things all sorted out, and then the A5's began to call on CP! The A4s and A5s appear to have met up at the entrance to Blackney Pass, and we are now hearing their calls on the Parson Island hydrophone. Busy evening!

Distant calls audible.
It's been a steady afternoon of calls since the A30's and I15's made their way west through the fog past the lab this morning. Those groups continued with the ebbing current and were later reported off of Donegal head around 11:00am. Shortly after the turn of the tide, we started to hear very faint A4 calls on our Critical Point and CP hydrophone. Megan and Momoko at CP were able to see a few individuals, and we were able to follow their travels east towards the Bight. At 1:49pm the A4 group passed by our Critical Point camera and traveled further towards the Eastern boundary of the reserve. They have since switched directions and after some very noisy cruise ships, we are now enjoying their calls on the Critical Point hydrophone. Hopefully there are lots of fish! Superb sounds!!
The A4s (A35s and A73s) are in the Bight: http://explore.org/live-cams/player/orcalab-robson-bight after travelling all the way to western Johnstone Strait between 9am and 12pm. They then turned back to the east and travelled back to the Bight.

We have been watching (you can too on explore)the activity at the rubbing beaches and listening to the whales off Robson Bight. A group seemed to come up from the east to the beaches while most of the others were still off the Bight. We began to wonder if the A42s were coming back and if so that the whales in both locations were then trying to sort themselves out and decide on a mutual direction. At times the fog has lifted but mostly we are listening. The A30s are there too by the way.

Superb sounds!!
Just after midnight we began to hear calls once more in Johnstone Strait. It sounded like very distant A4s who may have come in via Weynton Passage and were making their way eastward. There was terrible boat noise but we managed to track the A4s who had been accompanied by the I15s to the Bight where they are now. The calls are spectacular (www.orca-live.net) despite a recent boat and we have even managed to see someone through the 0/0 fog.
