Distant calls audible.
Sounds like the whales did indeed take Weynton Pass. Now in Blackfish Sound.

No calls but orcas nearby
After waiting for quite a while and listening to the distant calls of all the groups we believe they may have taken the slack tide into Weynton Passage. We will know for sure when we hear them come out the other side in Blackfish Sound.

Where to start. If you have been following through the day you will already know it has been busy, really busy!! Our day started with the A30s and the I15s (perhaps still the I4/I65s) moving into Blackfish Sound from Blackney Pass. Their calls faded off just past midnight. Then at 4:25am we heard their distant calls once again in Blackfish Sound as they disappeared into Weynton Pass. Nothing more for a while but at 6:30am Kate said the A23s and A25s went for a 10 minute rub at Bere Point and at 6:44am we began to hear G clan calls on Flower Island at 7:08am when the A30s and their I15 group travelled north again past the Lab. It was a lovely pass. As they cleared we heard more G clan calls in Blackfish Sound and eventually the A30s and their I15 companions as well. Just before 8am, we believe the A30s and the I15s went through Weynton Pass to Johnstone Strait where they travelled east slowly and quietly against the tide. It took a while for the next events to unfold but we got word from Jared and the Naiad X that the A23s and I68s were off Bold Head. At 12:30pm , the A30s and the I15s were entering Robson Bight and we followed them through the Bight until they rounded the corner at Critical Point. At 1:08pm the A23s, some of the I35s and I68s were committed to moving east from Bold Head. To our delight, some of the A30s and I15s passed by Strider and made their way to the Main rubbing beach. But only one whale went close to the beach before they all turned to the west again. Pretty soon, at 1:34pm, the A23s, I35s and I68s,who were very spread out, and still working against the tide, came into our view in Blackney Pass. As they made their way through the Pass they were very vocal. By 2:26pm the A30s and the I15s were back off Critical Point and quite vocal as well. By 2:30pm, the A30s and I15s were making their way through the Bight and the other groups were making their way to the entrance of Blackney Pass. So it was apparent that we would soon have converging groups! To make life interesting A61 (of the A25s) was still further back (still in BFS) with the rest of the I35s After 2pm, they too made their way into Blackney and eventually Johnstone Strait just behind the others. The two group combinations, coming from their opposite directions, then met up between Kaikash and Izumi Rock. According to Marie, there were a lot of breaches so it seems the whales were as excited as we were. Since the meeting the whales went off to the west.

The A30s and I15s met up with the A23/25s and part of I35 group in the Strait. Sounded like all whales headed west from the entrance of Blackney Pass.

Lots of whales! Some of the I31s and A5s are heading South in Blackney Pass, and the A30s + I15s are heading West in Johnstone Strait away from the Main Rubbing Beach. Very exciting! Stay tuned...

We have a wealth of whales today. The I15s (perhaps all of them) headed east past Critical Point in Robson Bight. We are hoping they will go to the Main rubbing beach. Meanwhile, the I68s, A23s and A25s and some of the I35s are headed east in Blackfish Sound. We are ready on both fronts with the cameras so please head to explore and make your choice!

Still hearing very distant A30s and I15s off the western end of Blackfish Sound. We are hoping that the whales off Numas, reported via the Mackay's yesterday evening, will turn up as well.
