No calls but orcas nearby

The transients and the residents have been travelling in opposite sides of Johnstone Strait and in opposite directions this evening. Over an hour ago now Marie reported that the A23s/A25s were passing the beaches headed west and the T101s were passing Boat Bay headed east.

The T101s are half way through Blackney Pass, travelling slowly towards Johnstone Strait. Meanwhile, the A5s have turned around and are now heading back to the west.

The T101s have circled around and are on their way back through Blackfish Sound. The A23s and A25 continued east from the Reserve.

As the A5s headed east in Johnstone Strait, a group of Biggs (transient) orcas entered the scene. Possibly, these were the orcas Dave Towers reported travelling east past Alert Bay about 7:30am. They were seen killing a Dall's porpoise off Big Bay, then heading into Blackney Pass. Just after entering Blackfish Sound, they turned around and headed back to Johnstone Strait.

The A5s entered Johnstone Strait via Weynton Pass and travelled east close to Vancouver Island. They were silent except for some echolocation in Robson Bight, and headed down towards the rubbing beaches. After just a few quick rubs at the Strider beach, they continued to the east.

Report of about 12 orcas in Blackfish Sound, heading east, maybe the A5s?
