No orcas present.

The Bigg's orcas continue to move around the area. Yesterday, David and Brittney on their trip to change batteries at the hydrophone sites came across the T46Cs near Cracroft Point in the entrance to Blackney Pass in the early afternoon. The group went into Johnstone Strait close to the Cracroft Island shore and turned back to the west before reaching the Sophia Island. We had them on the camera briefly but lost them when they took a long dive. David and Brittney sent photos to Jared Towers who confirmed the IDs. Beautiful, cold, clear weather here. You can check out the scene by going to www.explore.org. The link to those cameras here still is still not working. Sorry for the extra step!

No orcas present.

Good news! Jared Towers located the T46Bs in Cormorant Channel before 3pm AND he let us know tonight that Yvonne took pictures of the A23/A25s off Echo Bay today. At least we know now they have not really left the area. Perhaps they will drop back into range of the hydrophones again. Thanks Jared and Yvonne!

The Bigg's orcas heard earlier moved into Johnstone Strait where they headed east toward the Reserve. We heard them briefly on CP around 10am. This was a while after dolphins were also heard in Johnstone Strait. We found the orcas' blows when they were opposite the Sophia Islands mid strait. They were heading toward Vancouver Island. Jared Towers managed to get out and he found T55A and others off Robson Bight and beyond. We finally saw a male when he was opposite the Main rubbing beach around 12pm. The whales were at that time continuing east mid strait and closer to Cracroft Island.

No orcas present.

A windy and chilly day here on Hanson Island. No word or sign of the A5s since they continued east past the rubbing beaches. Sadly our hydrophones keeping going offline due to lack of sunlight for the solar panels. Hopefully we'll get some sun in the next few days in case they decide to come back our way.

No orcas present.

The A23s and A25s went past the rubbing beach, headed out to mid strait and continued east. We followed on the camera until they were incredibly distant and the light began to fade. Only a few calls s they passed over the beaches. Lovely day here! A thanks to Jared Towers who first saw the A5s from his house in Alert Bay this morning. Given how quiet the A23/25s are being it is so welcome to have eyes on the ocean!

No orcas present.

Windy day here after the serene calm day yesterday. The A23s/A25s were vocal until about 11am at which time they were distant on the Critical Point (Robson Bight) hydrophone. Even though the above camera link is not working you can see the cameras at work on www.explore.org (OrcaLab Base). We took the underwater camera out yesterday in advance of the winter storms.

Today, Corky's family were seen in Johnstone Strait!. Roger McDonell saw them first heading west along the Hanson Island shore. Jackie Hildering out to survey the humpbacks found them off Telegraph Cove with the help of Jim Borrowman before 3pm. They had been socializing and turned east. You can see pictures on Jackie Hildering's FB page. Jackie found the humpbacks Quartz and Ripple in Blackney Pass and the Lab also added Guardian, who they had seen earlier, to the list. Quite the day especially with the recent Sea World buzz. The A23s and A25s were silent as far as we could tell.
