No orcas present.

This evening the A30s came through Weynton Pass after travelling west in Johnstone Strait. The last faint calls we heard were at 6:23pm. We assume they carried on to Queen Charlotte Strait. I forgot to mention earlier that the Naiad Explorer found and followed a small group of Bigg's orcas toward Alert Bay today. This group passed Alert Bay to the west around 12:30pm.

Distant calls audible.

The A30s came in, went east in Johnstone Strait, paused for a rub and Kazumi, Strider and the Main beaches. They remained pretty spread out in little groups. On their way west after turning (one group went as far as the eastern boundary) they went back for a brief rub at Kazumi and then began to cross toward Cracroft Point which is where things are at right now. Thanks to the Wardens for filling in the details.

No orcas present.

After almost 4 hours of continuous vocalizing the T002Cs finally moved away from Blackfish Sound to the west. That was pretty amazing ; guests here came and went, chores were done, humpbacks photographed, kids played and explored, parents watched and talked, all the while, with the Bigg's in the background.

No orcas present.

We lost track of the orcas just before 9pm when they were still in Johnstone Strait. Afterwards we heard dolphins between 1:30 and 3 am.

No calls but orcas nearby

Good evening! The A23s/A25s and the A73s made it back to Johnstone Strait this afternoon, coming back from the west. They seem to be headed down the Strait. It was so interesting as they were quiet during their travels until fairly recently. Their calls have since dropped off again.

No orcas present.

I love daytime and the clarity it sometimes offers. I stayed with the recording until 3am and then had to go to bed but the story was far from complete. As the first group (and we think it was the A25s) came through Blackney Pass to Blackfish Sound and faded off into the distance around 3am, a second group (possibly the A23s and the A4 group) suddenly were present off Cracroft Point. We believe this grouping continued west in Johnstone Strait, rounded Hanson Island, passed through Weynton Passage and headed to Donegal Head by approximately 7am approxim. A group of 10 - 12 were seen around then heading into Queen Charlotte Strait. So now we are in a pause and after yesterday's excitement taking the moment to get everyone oriented and organized.

No calls but orcas nearby

What an incredible day!! We welcomed Luke,Ben & Amelie to Orcalab. Ellie was happy to see company and more people to help out after being charge of the Lab pretty much by herself for nearly 3 weeks. Not long after everyone arrived after spending the night in Alert Bay word came that the A30s and the A23s and A25s were on their way in. Finally, this afternoon we began to hear the familiar calls of the A23s and A25s and the A30s. But there was a surprise of A4 calls as well. Yea!! We spent the next few hours tracking the orcas through Blackney Pass and into Johnstone Strait. Just past Kaikash Creek, Warden Erin told us some went in for a rub. The A30s peeled away and came back to the entrance to Blackney Pass as the others, the A23s, A25s and A4s went in for a rub at the Main beach. It was an amazing rub. Thank goodness Mike Durban fixed the underwater camera in time! We got to see Springer and her two babies above and below water. A109, with the terrible injury, also passed in front of the underwater camera. The groups continued east after the rub while the A30s eventually moved into Blackney and headed north to Blackfish Sound. They probably have not yet gone far. What a Canada Day! What an introduction to OrcaLab!

Just so you are ready! We had word around 12pm that the A23s/A25s and possibly the A30s were in Queen Charlotte Strait. They are still there off Lizard Point. Not making a lot of headway but generally moving eastward. Keep your fingers crossed they make it all the way down here.
