Yes, distant calls on Flower Island! This after reports of orca heading in from Queen Charlotte Strait.

Superb sounds!!

Orca and dolphins. Might be rusty but sounds like A4s to me, getting louder.

They are still coming! Just quietly at the moment. There is talk that the A5s are there (too?)

Helena
08 Jul 2011 09:41:00 PDT

uperb sounds!!

Great! The A8s plus perhaps A61 led the way into Blackney Pass, close to the Hanson Island shore. They carried on to Johnstone Strait and vocalised as they headed past Cracroft Point. The A35s followed also coming close to Hanson Island. They were very relaxed and just now are vocal as they head east as well. The A34s are also moving toward Johnstone Strait but from Weynton Pass. Busy, busy and sunny too!

No calls but orcas nearby

Just two more notes: the C10s have been reported travelling with the A34s. And, the transient, T12A was spotted off the Cliff opposite Robson Bight as the northern residents were headed toward johnstone Strait. He carried on to the west and passed the A34s (and C10s) as they made their way east from Weynton Pass.

Orcas near mics.

The A34s are off Cracroft Point heading east while the A35s jumped ahead of the A8s. Both these groups are headed or at the beaches by now. The A8s went past Critical Point (Robson Bight) quite closely. The groups seem to be taking turns vocalizing which is convenient!

Distant calls audible.

The whales are heading west. The A35s and the A8s moved over to Cracroft Island from Vancouver Island and then went right under Marie's Cliff. The A34s may have turned about the same time. The Cs have hardly said anything and are proving difficult to track. The boat noise (poor whales) is awful.

Multiple pod calls audible.

Sounds like everyone has woken up as they head to the west. The A34s and C10s turned about 10 minutes ago together.

Helena

Around 7:15 pm we lost track of the whales as they continued to the west. After a couple of hours we began to wonder what happened to them. Finally, Troy was able to let us know that the A34s and C10s were making their way around Donegal Head. Troy thought others might be there too. Fingers crossed they come back soon.

Boat noise

A lovely cool morning here... the early July weather has been wet so the clearer skies this morning are welcomed. A lone humpback travelled north through the Pass at 5:45am. Yesterday, Stripe wandered back and forth in Blackney Pass so perhaps this was Stripe again. Doris, you were right, there were dolphins throughout the night but sadly no orcas followed. We still do not understand the couple of "A" call bursts that happened in the last few days. No one has seen anything. Curiouser and curiouser as Alice would say in Wonderland.

The sun really did try today and it is a lovely evening. Today 3 humpbacks were in Blackney Pass during the day, Stripe, KC and Chunky. Dolphins and Dalls porpoise were nearby so it was fairly busy.

Stripe has been in Blackney Pass this morning with two other companions. The sea lions have been lolling on the surface a lot today, sticking their pecs into the air - looking like "dorsal" fins in the fog.

No orcas present.

Today our hearts were beating just a bit faster. After hearing about the transients near Campbell River and that they had sunshine as well we were all feeling a bit left out. Then around 2:15pm 4-5 orca were seen off Donegal Head! Of course, everyone thought the residents had come in. It turned out to be transients who skirted around Donegal Head and headed toward the backside of Cormorant Island (Alert Bay) where we were doing our town run. So we were glad we did not miss residents and happy the whale watchers got a break. BUT we are home and waiting, waiting,waiting...

Just a lone humpback heading north today through Blackney Pass around 6pm. Earlier as we watched Dalls porpoise spread out through the Pass we watched a black Bear across on the Swanson shore avoid the neighbour's dog. The sun has been out so we are all feeing optimistic.

No orcas present.

We just had a nice encounter with a group of dolphins who came into Blackney Pass from Blackfish Sound and then turned north, some quite close to Hanson Island and OrcaLab. Two groups came together and then turned suddenly mid channel and charged back towards us cutting in even close to the Lab. They carried on and cleared around the corner only to reappear heading toward Baronet Passage along the Cracroft Island shore. They did this all silently and only just now are chatting a bit. Quite exciting for all the new assistants!

Distant calls audible.

Again we have heard a few mysterious distant "A" calls while we were listening in the house. We started a recording but there has been nothing since and we don't know where the calls were coming from. Such a tease! We do know the A30s were up north recently travelling with some of the Rs. We will be patient. Meanwhile, it has been a busy day. Stripe the humpback is in Blackney and Chunky,KC and two others are near Mitchell Bay along with a Gray Whale and a minke off Donegal Head.

No calls but orcas nearby

Just a few further details about last night. There were only a very few calls, a teaser it seems, in Blackfish Sound. All was quiet before 11:30pm but Elizabeth may have heard something on the "right" which means they may have gone into Johnstone Strait. None of this was clear as the calls disappeared as quickly as they happened. It sounded like "As" and possibly A1s. The day certainly seems brighter!

Busy morning here in Blackney Pass. At 0930 100+ Pacific White-sided dolphins came leaping and porpoising from the north while calling the whole time. Some stopped and foraged while the majority continued to quickly transit to the south. Then at 1000 Twister arrived from the same direction! Looks as though some feed is moving through the pass with the flood current. The sun is intermittently peaking out of the clouds and the sea is calm.

Dolphins were calling and echolocating in Johnstone Strait at 2237 last night. Then at some point in the wee hours of the morning, I could hear them alongside a cruise ship heading north in Blackney. Good news! With much perseverance the rubbing beaches hydrophone has been reinstalled and is up and running! No calls but orcas nearby

Today has been a day filled with cetaceans!!!! At 0800 40-50 Pacific White-Sided dolphins were milling, foraging and generally enjoying themselves in Blackney Pass for half an hour before they grouped up and quickly porpoised to the north. 2 hours later 4 Transient Orca were spread in two groups across the Pass as they quietly headed north. They were later identified by Jared Towers as the T19s. Then at 1315 a humpback traveled south through the Pass into Johnstone Strait. S/he was then spotted again facing south in Blackney at 1600. Then 'Dusty' the Grey whale was spotted in Johnstone heading west by Christie McMillan and Jared T. near Bauza Islets. Dusty is the rare Grey whale that stuck around in this area for the entire summer of 2010. Unbelievable! All the while the sun shone and the sea was like glass! What an incredible day!

There are some very chatty Transients in Johnstone Strait on this calm and glorious morning. These could be the same Orca from the sighted Transient Superpods at Chatham Point yesterday. It sounds as though there are a lot of them and their calls are echoing in Robson Bight. We are also hearing echolocation!

It turns out that there were around 30 Transients in Johnstone Strait...a Superpod indeed! They were spread out in groups of 2-10 and were very social. Then all at once they grouped up in two huge groups and headed west at a speed of 10-15kts! Donna Mackay just reported that by 1414 they were still heading west, fast, off of Sointula.

The T10s and T26s just headed North in Blackney Pass! The were rolling, tail slapping, doing head stands and rubbing each other as they quietly traveled by. They must have been chomping down on some prey as the seagulls hovered above them during their entire time through the Pass.

Exciting morning here at Orcalab...the T023's have been in front of the lab for an hour and a half now!!! They started out by going North in Blackney Pass @0822 then turned @0829 in Parson Bay. They milled mid-channel abeam Parson light for over an hour facing South but not going anywhere, well actually being pushed backwards a little by the max. ebb @0831 @ -6.1! We've heard a few calls amidst the boat noise and have just managed to determine that they are on Critical Point! Here's hoping that the boat moves quickly out of hydrophone range!

A Tsunami alert has been issued for Coastal British Columbia. We probably won't see much here on the inside passage, and the Advisory is for the North/Central and West Coast. We will keep you posted.

Sorry, we will re-establish audio as soon as possible, hopefully sometime this afternoon. After the huge storms that have battered the coast, we are enjoying a lovely calm and even sunny day! Yea!

While doing maintenance at CP (we now have live audio again!) Leah spotted transients mid-strait heading West. We have been hearing calls since 1512 on Parson and Critical Point!!

No calls but orcas nearby

The transients have gone quiet but Leah IDed the transients as T019's and T055's. As they headed West in Johnstone they seemed to be quite excited about something as they were breaching and tail slapping!!!

Well the storm has subsided and the birds are breathing a sigh of relief:) The winds blew between 40-50 kts at the height of the storm and large amounts of spray whipped North up Blackney Pass. Absolutely invigorating!

We spotted 2 orca, 1 male & 1 female, just as they quietly rounded the corner at Burnt Point, heading North in Blackney. There may have been more in the lead??

Happy March 1st! It has still been quiet, whale wise, over the past few days. Sunny and snowy here today...almost feels like spring is in the air!
