We had a few Transient calls this evening! However, they were so few and far in between that we couldn't get to the lab fast enough to figure out where they were calling. Christie and Jared reported that there were 11 transients in QCS earlier today! There was also a juvenile humpback heading west in Johnstone Strait...the first one we know of in this area in February!

I13 spotted with a new baby
No calls but orcas nearby
The I11's were very cooperative today as they waited until daylight to begin vocalizing in Johnstone Strait before they quickly headed west towards the lab. They were all grouped together with I13 and her new baby tight to her side!!!! They began to spread out as they headed north out of our view. The last call we heard was on Flower at 1052.
A very excited Leah and Marie:)

News from CetaceaLab! "Hi All, Happy New Year! Just wanted to keep you updated as to what is happening around here. Had A4s and A5s yesterday early afternoon traveling south in Whale Channel in gailforce outflow winds. Had a quick chance to go out and see who was there. The whales were spread out and from the individuals I saw I came to the conclusion that there were: A24s ( saw A71), A35s (sawA35 and A73), A51s (saw A51 and her young calf) and A43s (saw A60). There were more whales of course but it got too cold to be out on the water in an open boat. The whales continued south into Campania Sound aiming for Rennison Island. They had quiet a long foraging stop just south of Ashdown Island. Cheers, Hermann"

Sorry everyone, but we have lost our internet connection & don't know when we will be able to stream live audio again. We're trying to figure the problem out, and will hopefully solve it before too long. Meanwhile, we should tell you that the "G clan" groups who have been in Johnstone Strait lately headed "out" via Blackney Pass & Blackfish Sound this afternoon. We're not sure if the A30s are still in Johnstone Strait, but heard a few calls from them around 2am today, then there was just silence for the rest of the night. We are waiting, and hope all's well with you all.

As the A30s and the G/I groups came toward the entrance of Blackney Pass, we had the nice surprise of seeing the G3s, G23s and possibly the G31s come into Blackney Pass from Blackfish Sound. There was also a group of dolphins travelling with them and as they sped through, they excited a group of sea lions who extended their necks to see what was going on. A fairly large group of orcas travelled south close to Paron Island. We think they cleared to johnstone Strait around 9:42am. There have only been a few "sounds" from this group who were travelling slowly againstthe tide and windy waves. The tide will turn in their favour around 11am. The transients heard on Oct 10 turned out to be the T30s and T137s. Thanks to Graeme Ellis for confirming the photos taken by Rolf Hicker that afternoon.

That was truly amazing. We have not heard humpbacks vocal in the daytime before never mind two! Superb sounds!!
Hi everyone, In all the excitement to record these whales, I forgot to add an update! Thanks for the IDs, Helena. We've seen the A30s, and think the A36s may be coming up behind them. We'll keep looking for the A12s.

Happy Thanksgiving from Hanson Island. For those of you concerned about the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline, please check out this link: http://www.thepipedreamsproject.org/ We had a visit from these brave kayakers (Faroe, Curtis and Ryan) yesterday. A really inspiring group.

After a big storm, everyone is enjoying the sunshine -- including humpback whales and dozens of Steller sea lions. We thought we heard a faint call about 30 minutes ago. Anyone else?

Distant calls audible.
Just after 5am we began to hear distant G clan calls. The group made their way into Blackney from Blackfish Sound at the slack tide and then continued to make a go of it against the tide. We could hear their blows at 6am mid channel, making progress, opposite Parson Island light. The wind is picking up and it is more difficult to hear blows. They just started to become vocal again. Possibly I31. Heading into Johnstone Strait.

OK, Orca-Live community, we need your help! We've just started hearing calls, but this is our first Orca-Live update. Who are these whales? All the best from a very windy Hanson, Erin and Rob

No orcas present.
We've heard no orcas calling today, or yesterday, but heard a report yesterday, from the Naiad Explorer, that the A30s were off Hunt Rock, near Pine Island, north of Port Hardy. Hopefully, they will make their way back to Johnstone Strait before too long. We are waiting.

Boat noise
Be prepared - there is a fishing opening today and there will be (already is) a lot of boat noise. We are hoping the groups from the east will turn up at some point in the day.

A group of about 12 orcas quickly passed CP (Cracroft Point)! They are silent and travelling quickly. They avrried unexpectedly and we are hoping that they will soon become vocal and give us another chance to identify who they are. Just started to call! Dolphins passed Kaikash Creek around 9am.

Multiple pod calls audible.
Shortly after the I15s entered Johnstone Strait, we heard the other groups who have been in the east on the Rubbing beach hydrophone, so knew they were coming back. They were vocal briefly, and then mostly silent. Eventually, they moved westward, along the Vancouver Island shoreline. At the moment, they A1s & Gs are heading across the Strait toward CP & Blackney Pass, while the I15s are enjoying a good rub.

What a day! Ok so here is what has happened so far... the groups of whales that went to the west cleared into Weynton Pass and they have curled around into Blackfish Sound. Jackie on the Maple Leaf let us know that they are headed east. The whales are in mixed groups and are being accompanied by persistent dolphins. We began to hear their very distant calls (G1 and A1) at 5:12pm when they came into Blackfish Sound. Whew!

These whales are in no hurry! Jackie now reports that they are generally moving toward Queen Charlotte Strait (the tide is ebbing in that direction) but some are still looking toward Blackfish Sound (the tide turns at 8:46pm). So we will see.

Orcas near mics.
Not orcas but dolphins. Several reports to relay: First of all Jared Towers identified today's transients as the T99s. They ended up passing Alert Bay and Hyde Creek on their way west. Next the Gs from this morning were located by Rob Williams& Erin Ashe and Sun Fun Divers in Queen Charlotte Strait this afternoon. They certainly had not gone far since the morning. This group turned out to be all the G3s. They continued west and were last seen off Malcolm Point. Finally, the whales to the east were reported to have made it through Seymour Narrows by 4:45pm. Jack Springer let Marie know of their progression. In this group are more G clan whales along with all the A1s. Earlier in the day (around noon), Aaron reported that these same whales were off the "bottom" end of Quadra Island. Quite the day! Great reports! Right now there are vocal dolphins again in Johnstone Strait not far from the east end of the Reserve.

It has been a day of humpbacks, dolphins and sea lions - everywhere. Nine humpbacks were counted in the area along with countless sea lions. The Naiad Explorer passed along a report of 25 -30 orcas that were seen from the air off Comox (east of Campbell River) yesterday from 12:30-2:30pm. The whales were heading east toward Denman Island. There are dolphins vocalising right now.

These unusual sounds are probably being made by a humpback in Blackney Pass, not far away from our hydrophone.
