Boat noise

Be prepared - there is a fishing opening today and there will be (already is) a lot of boat noise. We are hoping the groups from the east will turn up at some point in the day.

Distant calls audible.

A group of about 12 orcas quickly passed CP (Cracroft Point)! They are silent and travelling quickly. They avrried unexpectedly and we are hoping that they will soon become vocal and give us another chance to identify who they are. Just started to call! Dolphins passed Kaikash Creek around 9am.

Multiple pod calls audible.

Shortly after the I15s entered Johnstone Strait, we heard the other groups who have been in the east on the Rubbing beach hydrophone, so knew they were coming back. They were vocal briefly, and then mostly silent. Eventually, they moved westward, along the Vancouver Island shoreline. At the moment, they A1s & Gs are heading across the Strait toward CP & Blackney Pass, while the I15s are enjoying a good rub.

No calls but orcas nearby

What a day! Ok so here is what has happened so far... the groups of whales that went to the west cleared into Weynton Pass and they have curled around into Blackfish Sound. Jackie on the Maple Leaf let us know that they are headed east. The whales are in mixed groups and are being accompanied by persistent dolphins. We began to hear their very distant calls (G1 and A1) at 5:12pm when they came into Blackfish Sound. Whew!

No orcas present.

These whales are in no hurry! Jackie now reports that they are generally moving toward Queen Charlotte Strait (the tide is ebbing in that direction) but some are still looking toward Blackfish Sound (the tide turns at 8:46pm). So we will see.
