Distant calls audible.

Whew! A beautiful day and lots of Orcas! We had the Biggs pass through Blackney Pass early this morning at 6:26am traveling South. There was one male and two small fins. As expected, they didn't vocalize and took some long dives. To our surprise, at 10:03am they turned around and visited us again this time traveling North! This time we were able to ID them as male T55A, a sprouter and 2 smaller fins. By 10:42, they had cleared out of BP into Blackfish Sound. It wasn't long after that we started to hear calls on FI and at 11:50am a group was spotted on the Sea Lion Rock camera heading into Blackney Pass. The first group were in line with Turtle Rock at 11:52am. We believe they were the A23s with 5 orcas including one male and four females. They were closely followed by a second group with 2 small fins and one male, who we believed to be the A54s. We then had a third group enter at 11:59am with A61 and a sprouter, followed by a 4th group at 12:00pm who we believed to be the I72s. The first and second group members stayed closely together throughout Blackney Pass while the third and fourth group members both traveled more spread out. They had all cleared the pass by 12:12pm and continued on to Cracroft point where they slowly continued West. They are now calling on the Critical Point hydrophone.

Multiple pod calls audible.

The orcas decided for the merry-g0-round. Just before 11:30pm they were back in Johnstone Strait, most likely through Weynton Pass. For the next hour or so they moved eastward toward the entrance of Blackney Pass. A first group, A5s and an A30 group, entered Blackney around 2:50am and headed to Blackfish Sound by 3:14am. They were followed by a 2nd group, the rest of the A30s and I15s who entered the Pass at 3:33am. Given the associations of the past few days we wondered if the I4s were still with the A50s. Encouraged by a strong ebb tide both groups were calling in Blackfish by 3:48am. After some excited calling the groups are rapidly getting more distant.
