No orcas present.

It has been quite the day! Really the start to the orca summer season as the A23s and A25s made it into the area and were found by Bill Mackay this morning off Donegal Head. From there they proceeded slowly to the west. They just may have been the orcas who passed north through Blackney Pass earlier and not Bigg's as we first thought. Later in the day, Jared Towers and the "Raven" reported seeing the T152s and T28s in Queen Charlotte Strait. With them was a very young baby and Jared remarked that they were an unusual group in this area. So lots happening. We were kept busy for the rest of the day with dolphins and humpbacks. Wondering what the night will bring?

No calls but orcas nearby

We were just leaving the "opening Meeting" in Telegraph Cove when we heard that there were Northern Residents in Queen Charlotte Strait. Apparently they had begun to move eastward from Hardy Bay around 1:30pm (Donna Mackay). They managed to get to Bere Point in the evening and Kate reported they went in for a rub at 8:45pm. After that the trail went cold. We did not hear anything over night despite the hydrophones and ourselves (albeit a little tired) cranked up. This morning dolphins (about 100) went through Blackney to the north.

Lots of dolphin echolocation at Critical Point. Possibly the white sides.

4 orcas just passed through Blackney Pass. These are transients so they are typically quiet. We also have many white sided dolphins and Humpbacks in the area so keep your ears open!

No orcas present.

So here is what has been happening around the Lab for the last few days. Ellie has been busy listening to and recording several dolphin events. Last night and again this morning she heard them in Johnstone Strait at 11:47 pm and 5:11 am respectively. There are a fair number of porpoises each day in Blackney Pass and Ellie has also had dolphins (as many as 60+) travel through. Sadly she reported that a boat on one occasion chose to follow the dolphins very closely. The guidelines actually are for all cetaceans and marine mammals. The humpbacks are keeping her very busy as they too are a daily presence. Ripple and her baby have been seen on several occasions accompanied by other individuals.

Close dolphin calls on Critical Point. While fairly vocal at first, these dolphins seem to like to remain quiet. It is possible these are the white sided dolphins we saw yesterday,

No orcas present.

So sorry about the confusion. There was a erroneous post re the A34s being in the area. Would have been nice if true but the A34s on June 16 were on the north coast! So we are still waiting!

Distant calls audible.

After remaining in Blackfish Sound for most of the afternoon, the A34s - without G60/78, decided to move through Weynton Pass around 4pm. Hearing them now in Johnstone Strait.

At 11pm I heard the distinctive sound of a bubblejet feeding humpback - just the once so no chance so far to locate where! But amazing . . .!!

No orcas present.

Good news! Jackie Hildering relayed a report of orcas from Danielle Lacasse who saw 5-7 orcas today between Numas Island and Pultney Point. It looks like northern residents possibly some of the I15s who are probably checking out the area. We did not hear any calls overnight so do not think they dropped down here.

No orcas present.

Today was a lovely way to return to Hanson Island! The day was beautiful and as we got ready in Alert Bay word came that there were orcas off Telegraph Cove heading west at 9:44am. Turned out to be the T123s and the T23s (Jared Towers). They went right past Alert Bay, travelling smartly, splashing, breaching, as they went. It was quite exciting for everyone. People lined the shore as the word got out. Soon after we headed "down" the Strait and "home" to the Lab.
