last night we had the impression A12 went beyond Robson Bight. The rest of the night was quiet. Today, A12 has been sighted far to the east.

A12 moving around in the area

Distant calls audible.

Our internet connection has been down for a while today as the result of a huge lightning storm which passed over the area between 11pm and midnight. A12 spent the morning in Johnstone Strait. After her 2:20 am rub she headed back to the west and was calling off Cracroft Point by 4am. Later she was seen off of Big Bay (Hanson Island) at 7:50am. From there she crossed over to the western boundary of the Reserve (9:35) and carried on eastward to the Eve River where she once again turned west. She went past the Cliff opposite Robson Bight at 1:30 pm then straight on to Cracroft Point and Blackney Pass. She travelled energetically through Blackney Pass and is now in Blackfish Sound westbound (4:25 pm). Whew! Quite the tour.

Orcas near mics.

Today has been a rather interesting day and one that is a cause for reflection. A12 turned up by herself in Johnstone Strait earlier this morning. Her son, Nimpkish (A33) was not with her. Nor had he been with her earlier this Spring when she was sighted furhter north. This was at the same time as when her daughter's family (the A34s) were here in Johnstone Strait. This most likely means he has died. He was her constant companion. So today, we have been sadly trying to follow her solitary movements in the Strait. She has vocalised every so often and between the whale watch boats like the Tuan, Naiad and Lukwa, researcher Marie on the Cliff, Straitwatch and our own recordings, we have been able to follow her through the day. Unlike the other day, when she was with the A34s in Queen Charlotte Strait, she now seems fairly energetic, travelling and foraging in the Strait. She is pretty much the oldest matriarch in the northern resident community and so must hold a special place in her community. We are hoping that it will not be too long before she is joined by her family.

We began hearing A4 calls in Johnstone Strait a little before 7am. We're not sure where the calls were located, but we heard them on the Critical Point hydrophone. The orcas are silent now, and there is a lot of water noise from wind, so listening conditions aren't great.

Transients

No calls but orcas nearby

So here is an educated guess about what has happened so far. Perhaps, the calls heard at 2:35am (this morning) were this group entering the area on the flood tide. After being east, they came back this evening and, for now, headed west. The last calls we heard clearly were at 10:40pm. They seemed to be west of the Blackney Pass entrance.

Thanks for the notes re calls around 2:35am and thanks for all the intense listening. It really helps to have all ears monitoring. T44 found dead, floating near Port Hardy

No orcas present.

A couple of days ago, the MacKays were told of a sighting of a dead orca floating near Hope Island (near Port Hardy). The DFO was alerted and with the help of a Coast Guard boat, that was in the vicinity, the whale was secured. DFO was able to identify the 31 year old transient male as T44. A necropsy will be performed in the next day or so. Finding a whale, soon after death, is a very rare occurrence and presents an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge.

Not sure what to think at this point. We just got two reports of orcas (large group) heading west this morning in Johnstone Strait and through Pearse Passage. Slack tide to the ebb was at 7:20am. Thanks to Wendy,Bill and Barb for the reports. The OL audience began to hear calls as early as 3am so perhaps a group came in and then left "quickly". We finally picked up on calls just after 8am on the Flower Island station which might mean they are continuing to the west for now.To add to all of this, we thought we heard very distant transient calls around 11:38pm. This is a lot of sudden activity!

Orca-live is up and running!!

No calls but orcas nearby

Surprise,We are back! After what seems like an age, we have managed to reconstruct the system: All new radios. After so many trials and errors we are cautiously optomistic. It is possible that the signal will be intermittent until we solve one last problem but we will do our best to continue streaming live audio. Keep your fingers crossed! The last month has been incredibly busy with orcas - wouldn't you know it? The area has been visted by several transient groups, as well as, the I31s and A5s, from the northern resident community. On January 11th, the 131s were first heard coming into the area. During the following two weeks, they have travelled the entire length of Johnstone Strait. Recently, the I33 matriline has been heard and seen going back and forth from the Ecological Reserve to Telegraph Cove. Possibly, last night they were joined by the other I31s. We finally lost track of the calls, (still in the Strait), around midnight. Today, we got word that the A8s were near Pender Harbour! We had heard them come in and head east early January 20th. Pender Harbour is where Corky and 5 other A5 pod members were captured and taken away in 1969 - 39 years ago! Although the A5s have been known to travel Georgia Strait, this is an historic return to this location.

Southern and Northern Residents

No orcas present.

As promised. We are now able to report which whales were seen off Alert Bay on Nov.24th. The DFO has confirmed that it was part of the Ls. This is only the 2nd time that we know of that southern residents have chosen to head north in the late Fall via Johnstone Strait. Two years ago, southern residents came through in early December. At that time, it was dark so pictures were not possible. However, they were vocal. This time, we don't believe they were vocal while in range of our hydrophones but Paul was fortunate to be in town at the time they passed by and was able to take a few pictures. L85,L41,L77,L78,L79 and L25 were identified from the pictures. Thanks to Jared and Graeme for their help with the identifications.

Transients near Stephanson Islands

No orcas present.

Here is a brief summary of the last few days. On Thursday, Nov 27, Jim Borrowman reported that he could see two male orcas by the Stephanson Islands across from Telegraph Cove. The day before, Nov. 26, he took photos of T7, T7A and T12A so he wondered if the whales he was seeing on the 27th were the same transient group. Meanwhile, there are still humpbacks and sea lions around. We are still waiting for the photos of the group of twenty to be processed. We will hopefully let you know soon. three days have gone by and nothing to really report. There have still been humpbacks and sea lions and there were two days of fabulous weather. Today, it is windy, grey and wet. Looking back over the last 20+ years, we believe this has been the shortest northern resident season to date. November is not over and there may be more to come but we are keeping track and mindful that this has been a dismal salmon season as well and that this probably provides a big clue about the orca's behaviours. Fingers crossed that they are enough finding food elsewhere.

Our connection has been unstable today. However, here is a short update of the day's events so far. The A30s disappeared to the east, oast Robson Bight, around 3am. They recently have returned to the Bight (around 10am). Prior to the A30s' return, a small group of transients were in Blackney Pass in the middle of about 500 dolphins, sealions and two humpbacks. The A30s spent the day in Queen Charlotte Strait after their morning session in Blackfish Sound. They apparently were very spread out the entire time, mostly north west of Lizard Point. After 4pm they were last seen heading west from Bere Point. Thanks to Stubbs Island for the update. No sign of the A36s who we last heard around 10pm in Blackfish Sound.

A30s heading towards the Bight, A36s appear in Blackfish Sound

Distant calls audible.

We're hearing occasional calls on the Critical Point hydrophone, along with persistent boat noise. Sounds like the A30s have come back into Johnstone Strait, probably via Weynton Pass.

No orcas present.

We've heard no calls since early this morning, and don't know what happened to the A30s, who were in Johnstone Strait at the time (around 1:30am).

No calls but orcas nearby

Just after we posted our last note, we heard (from the Naiad Explorer) that the A30s are foraging in the entrance of Blackney Pass, off CP. They are silent, so far as we know. Some dolphins (about 6) are there too.

The A30s are slowly making their way to the east in Johnstone Strait & are mid-strait off Kaikash pointing towards the western boundary of the Reserve. They are silent. Meanwhile, the A36 brothers have just been sighted at the "top" of Blackfish Sound & are slowly heading east towards Blackney Pass & Johnstone Strait.

Distant calls audible.

We most likely are hearing the A36s in Blackfish Sound while the A30s continue in Johnstone Strait. Dolphins are vocal as well in the Strait.

A30s travel north through Blackney Pass

Superb sounds!!

We're listening to close calls & echolocation on the Critical Point hydrophone. After intense boat noise for the past while, there is almost none now, so the A30 calls are clear!

Distant calls audible.

The A30s just went north through Blackney Pass. They were altogether mid channel as they went into Blackfish Sound.
