No calls but orcas nearby

We've had a pretty quiet day, mostly doing last minute chores before Megan left for her journey back home to the UK. Meanwhile, there are a couple of notes about whales. Marie reported at 1:15pm that 500+ Pacific Whitesided dolphins were going west past Alert Bay. Later around 3pm, she reported that the T10s were headed north in Weynton Pass and later at 3:40pm that they had gone through Pearse Pass. A full circle for Marie leading her back to Alert Bay! Yesterday, Donna and Bill Mackay watched the I12s (and maybe someone else) pass Ledge Point just after 6pm. Roger McDonnell had reported earlier that they had gone west past the Pearse Islands.

Distant calls audible.

We have continued to hear I11/31 type calls as the whales moved west this morning and early afternoon. They seemed to be fairly spread out with some near Blinkhorn(and west of) while others closer to the Hanson side after crossing the entrance to Blackney Pass. We followed earlier one group of 6 (with one male) through the Bight and then along the Vancouver shoreline. The Strait is a bit choppy today and there are lots of fish boats out ahead of the up coming opening.

Distant calls audible.

We are hearing faint G calls on Critical Point, Parsons Island and Cracroft Point so I guess the whales are somewhere around the entrance of Blackney Pass.

We had a report from Knight Inlet Lodge that there were some orca heading west in the reserve. We found them on the Main Rubbing Beach camera and we saw one male rubbing close to the shore. We then found more whales headed west mid strait at Swain Point. We are recording on Critical Point for when they arrive in the bight.

No orcas present.

And the lovely Humpback calls continue. This time we are hearing them on both Parsons Island and Cracroft Point. There seems to be a lot of splashing going on at the surface to.

Distant calls audible.

This group of G clan orcas are so interesting. We heard them on the CP hydrophone up to just past 7pm in Johnstone Strait. And now again, almost 4 hours later. It seems that they are somewhere off the entrance to Blackney Pass. They are being so very quiet, choosing to use only a few types of calls, mostly their lovely "pings".

We are now hearing Orca G clan pings on Critical Point. Interesting. The Humpback has stopped singing on Flower Island.

No orcas present.

It was a quiet morning after 2am. Don't know weather the whales continued to the east or not. A lovely morning here at the lab with over 50 SeaLions on the rocks.

Distant calls audible.

Hearing some GI calls again. This time defiantly on Critical Point. Sounds like they are in the bight.

I12 Calls are getting lovely in the bight And now a Humpback has began vocalizing on the Flower Island hydrophone. Hoping it will break out in to a song!

Orcas near mics.

We believe the I12s carried on to the east past CP but they certainly were struggling against the current when they crossed the entrance to Blackney Pass! We are now listening to their resting calls closer to Robson Bight.

Distant calls audible.

The Orca are still slowly heading east in the Strait. West of Cp. favouring the Hanson Island side. Marie reports at 16:23 that the I12's were heading South in Weynton Passage. We are still hearing the occasional call on Critical Point and Cracroft Point hydrophones.

We had a report of two Orca slowly heading easting between Bold Head and Donegal head in Blackfish Sound. G clan calls were heard. Thanks to Roger on the Lukwa for the report. We have started a recording and hope to hear them soon.
