Distant calls audible.

We began hearing distant calls in Blackfish Sound a short while ago. So far, we think the A36s & I31s are there.

No orcas present.

So we may have found the A30s. The warden boat saw an orca off Turn Point just before 8pm and more orca were seen off Telegraph Cove at 8pm. The whales were still heading west.

The I15s,I31s and then the A34s ventured through Blackney Pass and headed toward the A36s/A12 in Blackfish Sound. No sign of the A30s.

Orcas hunting fish.

The A36s and A12 were reported off Bold Head in Blackfish Sound around 5:30pm, thanks to the Naiad for the observation. Meanwhile, we are hearing the Johnstone Strait whales closer to CP.

Orcas rubbing on the shore bottom.

The follwoing is a summary of today's events. The A30s made a circle around Hanson Island this morning. They were through Blackney Pass very quickly on the ebbing tide. Something was "up" as the young ones were breaching and spyhopping. The A30s rushed into Queen Charlotte Strait and as the whale watch boats got into Queen Charotte Strait they became aware of other whales as well. Pretty soon, there were discussions about the I31s and I15s coming through Weynton Pass with the A30s. We got the news that one group was headed down Blackfish Sound. A while later A55 came into view along with the rest of his A34 family. They moved along to Johnstone Strait and were off CP as the rest of the whales travelled east, first from Weynton Passage and then from Big Bay further east. The parade formed up and continued east from CP with the I31s and the I15s travelling closer to Vancouver Island and the A34s and A30s mid strait. From there, past Critical Point and Robson Bight the I15s and the I31s visited the Main rubbing beach. The whales have just become vocal again and are still at or off the beaches.

Multiple pod calls audible.

Some of the groups (I15s most recently) have passed through Robson Bight, and are now within range of the rubbing beaches hydrophone. The movement is generally east.

Multiple pod calls audible.

The A34s are just about the enter Johnstone Strait, after passing through Blackney Pass. They've become vocal after being silent in Blackfish Sound. Other groups of orcas are headed east off Big Bay, including the A30s. Looks like they'll all meet up off the entrance to Blackney.

No calls but orcas nearby

The A30s are now in Blackfish Sound, after traveling swiftly north through Blackney Pass on the fast moving current. They are in a good mood, with A54's new baby breaching repeatedly, and lots of spyhops & tail slaps as the parade passed by.

No calls but orcas nearby

CP reports that the A30s are at the entrance to Blackney Pass, close to Hanson Island, looking like they'll take the swiftly ebbing tide and head north through the Pass. For the moment, they are silent.

Distant calls audible.

We've been hearing distant A1 calls on the Critical Point hydrophone since a little before 6am. The calls are now also on CP. Sounds like the A30s have probably come back into Johnstone Strait via Weynton Pass are are heading west.

Distant calls audible.

The A30s finally made a decision (around the slack tide) and headed toward the Reserve after foraging for a long while off of CP and the entrance to Blackney Pass. They were very spread out with A30 in the lead. This was between 4:30pm and 5pm.

Boat noise

It turned out that the A30s got part way into Blackney Pass & then turned around and headed back to the Strait again. Not sure why, but they were surrounded by heavy boat noise at the time, from a tug heading north in Blackney, a seiner heading south, and the Lukwa heading north. Possibly, things are quieter in the Strait, though not much, as there's a fishing "opening" today, and boat noise is everywhere. Meanwhile, there's a report of at least 6 orcas heading west at Lizard Point. If these are the A1s we were listening to earlier this morning, it may mean that the A34s are headed "out". If so, it's quite possible that A12 & the A36s are with them.

Orcas approaching Orcalab.

The A30s came up to Cracoft Point & are now heading north into Blackney Pass. The tide is just past slack, so they should have an easy time getting through the Pass.

Orcas hunting fish.

After a period of silence in Johnstone Strait (apart from boat noise) we started hearing echolocation close to the Critical Point hydrohone a short while ago. It's a foggy morning, and we're not sure what direction the orcas are going in.

Distant calls audible.

Quite a lot has been happening recently. While the A30s went past the rubbing beaches there were close G calls (?G25s) near Critical Point in Robson Bight. These were joined by other A1 calls (?the A12s who may have returned to the Strait before midnight). Recently, there have been calls every so often on Critical Point and just now, boat noise as something big comes west and a fish boat heads through Blackney and into the Strait as well.
