Distant calls audible.
We were listening calls from several families since 4am; at least someone from A1 and R-clan. they were in Blackfish sound that time, but stopped calling about an hour ago. We are not sure which direction they have gone, back to North or to Weynton pass.

Very exciting! The resident season has started - the A12s have returned. Currently, they westbound off the western boundary of Blackfish Sound. So far they have been totally silent except for a bit of echo location.

Finally, we have heard our first call! The A12s have moved back to Johnstone Strait via Weynton Pass. This morning they were apparently seen at 6:30am off lizard point when they were making their way into the area. This is the first call we have heard since they got "home".

Orcas near mics.
The A12s have become slightly more vocal as they move in closer to Robson Bight. They may be a bit spread out. The tide is now flooding and the southeaster has calmed down.

Still just hints of activity. The humpbacks and minke whales are still keeping everyone's attention and there are still reports of orca groups wandering Queen Charlotte Strait near Pine Island. Very exciting is a rare, unique report via the MacKays, of two sperm whales also near Pine Island.

June is rolling on. Stubbs Island Whale Watch has informed us that they have recently seen at least two mum/calf humpback pairs, a single humpback individual, a graywhale (just yesterday, and a minke (today). Further north, CetaceaLab continues to see northern residents (both As and Gs).

"Something's happening...." Reports are in from CetaceaLab of Gs and As recently in their area. Also, via the MacKays, a report, yesterday of two groups of orcas off pine Issland in the late afternoon. One group had at least 10 members. Stormy day here today but a rainbow broke through over Johnstone Strait not too long ago.

An interesting postscript: about 9 transients were seen heading west past Port McNeill around 7:45pm. This was possibly a different group from the group who were vocal in Blackfish Sound just 20 minutes earlier. Thanks to Bill and Donna MacKay for the report. Busy night!

A couple of sightings to add. On May 14th the same group of transients came back into Blackney Pass later in the day. Farewell Harbour, out for their first sport fishing of the season spotted them in the entrance of Blackney Pass and gave us the heads up. It was early evening but we were able to watch the group travel north through the Pass. Then yesterday, the Lukwa (Stubbs Island), on the lookout for a reported humpback, found the T2s in Weynton Pass very close to some Dalls Porpoise. Further north, there have been a few northern resident encounters off the central coast. It certainly feels as if the season is beginning to ramp up!

We just had a long session with very vocal and visable transtients (4) in Blackney Pass. Their behaviours and the numerous gulls circling about suggests they must have completed a successful hunt. They have now travelled into Blackfish Sound but are still vocal.

A group of 4 transients just passed south through Blackney Pass. One male accompanied 2 females and a calf. They were for a time very interested in a sealion but we don't believe they made a kill. The other sealions clustered in the water became quite agitated as the transients passed. Things have since settled down.
