May has started and so also an increase in the number of Humpback Whales sighted in Blackney Pass. Sightings began in April with a smaller individual who was not identified. Then briefly just before midnight a humpback in Johnstone Strait made a few feeding sounds. Finally, on May 9 two very familiar humpbacks, Guardian and Nova made their way through Blackney more than once. It felt, despite the unseasonably chilly weather, that the season was underway. Two other individuals turned up the next day, one on the very far side, one slightly closer. Obviously, the migration to these feeding grounds was well under way. The best encounter was when early in the morning of May 16 Nova reappeared close, very close to the Lab. Going south at first, Nova then ducked into the bay behind the small cabin and re-emerged at the point heading towards the Lab. Slowly and taking time Nova gradually passed but not before obliging with raised flukes.Who will we see next and is the cool Spring, which has included a lot of wind and rain, finally behind us?

No orcas present.

So great! Pretty sure we just had Nova and Guardian pass south through Blackney Pass. This was our first real sighting this Spring in Blackney Pass. We had had a bried glimpse of one individual previously but the encounter was just too, too brief.
