No calls but orcas nearby

At least the Ds have headed north through Blackney Pass, not sure about the C10s. It's a lovely moonlit night here, feels so great to be home!!

No calls but orcas nearby

This has been so exciting! We had just got back from Alert Bay when we heard the Ds had just gone south in Blackney Pass. We picked them up on the CP camera and followed them until they were very tiny whales in the big ocean. They called on entering Johnstone Strait, then went quiet and then vocal once again. They never sounded close to Critical Point but ahead of them were the C10s who had earlier also come into Johnstone Strait via Blackney Pass (see Paul's notes). The C10s disappeared just as the Ds came into the Strait. Surely they are still on the same track east? Last year, around this same time the Cs came in for a mid June trip. Amazing.

Boat noise

It was just a glimpse from the Lab, cameras & all, but the C10s have made it into the Strait and are now headed east towards the Bight. Their calls were fabulous as they passed the PI and CP hydrophones, but a procession of big vessels passed soon after - Alaska ferry then 2 cruise ships - so it isn't pleasant underwater! Just the same, it's looking like our 2017 season is underway, our day is made!

No orcas present.

Our small group of dolphins yesterday may have found some friends in Johnstone Strait! There were about 30 off Cracroft Point travelling east fairly quickly . We will try to follow them on the cameras (www.explore.org) There have been no call but during the night around 0445 there were a few faint calls heard. We did not located where the calls were from.

Got my wish! Ay 7:30am we spotted a single male off Parson Island headed toward Johnstone Strait. Yesterday, Gord reported at 4:12pm 5-6 orcas (Bigg's) heading west at Ledge Point.

We are almost certain that during yesterday's storm there was a humpback in Blackney Pass in the afternoon! Encouraging, eh?

No orcas present.

Lovely weather yesterday and today (after this morning). Spring is definitely here and with it a growing number of humpback reports as they make their way in and through the area. Black Pearl, just like last year, has started the season up in the Inlets and yesterday, Jared saw a humpback off Alert Bay. He also went in search of the orcas reported in the morning off Lady Ellen Point by Darryl. The Sea Lions have definitely taken off from their nearby winter haul out, most likely beginning their journey to the rookery. David and Brittney also have taken off to begin their journey home to Alaska. They should pass by Hanson by mid morning. We will be ready to wave while thinking how grateful we are for all their efforts to keep OrcaLab safe and running for the past three winters.
