No orcas present.

Our small group of dolphins yesterday may have found some friends in Johnstone Strait! There were about 30 off Cracroft Point travelling east fairly quickly . We will try to follow them on the cameras (www.explore.org) There have been no call but during the night around 0445 there were a few faint calls heard. We did not located where the calls were from.

Got my wish! Ay 7:30am we spotted a single male off Parson Island headed toward Johnstone Strait. Yesterday, Gord reported at 4:12pm 5-6 orcas (Bigg's) heading west at Ledge Point.

We are almost certain that during yesterday's storm there was a humpback in Blackney Pass in the afternoon! Encouraging, eh?

No orcas present.

Lovely weather yesterday and today (after this morning). Spring is definitely here and with it a growing number of humpback reports as they make their way in and through the area. Black Pearl, just like last year, has started the season up in the Inlets and yesterday, Jared saw a humpback off Alert Bay. He also went in search of the orcas reported in the morning off Lady Ellen Point by Darryl. The Sea Lions have definitely taken off from their nearby winter haul out, most likely beginning their journey to the rookery. David and Brittney also have taken off to begin their journey home to Alaska. They should pass by Hanson by mid morning. We will be ready to wave while thinking how grateful we are for all their efforts to keep OrcaLab safe and running for the past three winters.

No orcas present.

The last few days have been quite exciting as a fairly large group of Northern Residents came in and headed east past Robson Bight mid morning on March 23rd. We reviewed the recording of GIs, G17s and Cs making their way towards Robson Bight. Then, on March 25 these same groups came back to the west. Calls were heard around 7am. The Cs were in the lead and continued west and an hour later Jim and Mary Borrowman observed them spread out off the Telegraph Cove area. Our camera at Robson Bight saw the other two G clan groups heading back to the east at the same time. A bit later Elizabeth Zwamborn confirmed the I11s and G17s continuing east off Naka Creek around 1030. The Cs meanwhile were seen heading through Pearse Passage at 8:40 (thanks JB) and then later off Sointula by Gord Curry at 1030. Gord took a few pictures of the C6 males, which he passed on, thanks Gord. We think the Cs continued out of the area but we have not heard the G clan groups return so there is a chance there will be more activity if they decide to do so.

Orcas near mics.

We just had a brief but intense flurry of Biggs calls on Critical Point. They've gone quiet for the moment but they sure sounded happy.
