No orcas present.

Today, we had word of a large group of Northern Residents in the Port Hardy area. Jared Towers was nearby and identified the A34s,some of the A24s,some of the G02s, the I33s, some of the R05s and the R13s! He left them west bound off Cape Caution at 7pm. Also earlier today a large group of Bigg's went west in Johnstone Strait. Jared caught up with them and counted 25 in total! He left them west bound also at Duncan Island at 9:30pm. Quite the day! Our gang was busy with the humpbacks including Guardian.

A very misty, foggy morning here. Kim heard a humpback blow but the whales was buried deep in the fog. Getting brighter now so fingers crossed!

Distant calls audible.

Again, Bigg's calls still in Johnstone Strait! Probably the same whale as before - T2C2 was the guess.

Today was quite an eventful day! This morning Ecological Reserve Warden Marie Fournier texted to say that a lone orca was reported heading west from Naka Creek. Marie and her crew soon saw the whale in question. At first everyone wondered if the orca might be Sam (T046C2) who was the whale rescued in 2013 from an bay on the north coast where she had been separated from her family. Sam went on to reunite with her family later. But this whale today was not Sam. Marie compared pictures and concluded that this might be T2C2. Why the whale was without family is unknown but as the orca progressed "up" the Strait we heard calls! This was a treat to think we were listening to a single individual! So rare. The little orca called more times during the travel west. We also had about 100 dolphins come south through Blackney Pass while all this orca drama was unfolding. Quite the day and humpbacks too!

Thanks to Jackie and Christie of MERS for letting us know that the Biggs today in the misty afternoon were the T073As. Too far for us to tell but fortunately there is this great network out there! Christie left them heading east in Knight Inlet.
