Woke to hear a trumpeting and "banging" humpback in Blackney Pass followed by a few calls that developed into a more sustained effort. We are recording. Yesterday morning about 10:30am we caught sight of an orca just disappearing into Blackfish Sound. This was after Knight Inlet Lodge reported seeing them. Distant calls audible. We have been recording a humpback in Blackfish Sound for just over a half hour. The humpbacks this year are not following the patterns of the last couple of years, calling during the day more often and making some different calls as well. So interesting. The Naiad passed along a sighting by The Dancer that there were four orcas headed to the "bottom" end of Kingcom Inlet around 5pm. Jared Towers reported that the humpback "Chunky" was travelling westward with a companion headed toward Port McNeill at 5:30pm. Helena 06 Oct 2013 17:51:36 PST Multiple pod calls audible. Orcas near mics. The humpback keeps going in fits and starts, still in Blackfish Sound. Apparently, it was the T123s who were in Pearse Pass and Cormorant Channel earlier. Earlier this afternoon around 5pm Marie reported that a group of three orca (two males +) travelled north through Pearse Pass to Cormorant Channel where they turned east.
